Kent / Re: St Alfege Greenwich Font

thank you very much for your replies - and sadly, it appears the font now in situ would not have been the one my relatives were baptised from, but I will contact the church. cheers, Louise

Kent / St Alfege Greenwich Font
« on: Thursday 21 March 24 10:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hello - can anyone tell me if the font currently used in the St Alfege church is the original (or used from 1780-1870) one? I am aware that the interior was gutted by WW2 bombing, and restored, but not sure of the extent of the restoration. while i have found basic info online, I can't find any history books or old illustrations of the church. i have a branch of my Paxton and Clarkson family married, baptised and buried there. Cheers, Louise

the last was just after his daughters wedding, when there is a family memory that he was upset he had not been invited. there is a mention in a business directly 1868 - but its unclear what his business was!
He had been in the police force, and a border police officer (finding run-away convicts). he had been a teacher at a school in Adelaide. He wrnt to Burma for a few years - he seems to have been a manager, but I am unsure.
there are very few mentions of him after his time in the border police.

i did look for their deaths, and surprisingly, little was said in TROVE. Elizabeth was just a 'very old lady who died'  a few years after her husband. I have not found a Will that mentions George Gordon Wise. He appears to have been estranged from all his family.

This is a real puzzel and I would love to solve it!

thanks for yur reply

Really don't know what happened to this man, but he is NOT the George Gordon Wise who died in 1869, Victoria with parents George & Ellen

George Gordon Wise born 3rd Jan1823 in Tasmania to George and Elizabeth Day. Married Mary Sanders or Saunders in Adelaide 1847. Divorced 1868. appears to have been living in Victoria in 1867. Incorrectly noted as deceased on daughter Amy's marriage registration. A colourful life, lived in WA, SA, VIC and also Java, Indonesia. can anyone find his death? not memorialised on any of his children's graveyard details.

thats great - and I did wonder about a car acciedent, however the court mention noted Kill and slay - harsh words for what was most probably an accident.

Many thanks for your inovative searching - it is a bit of a lottery, and I am so glad you found the answer!

thank you everyone - yes, I saw the passenger list and thought that Eileen Margot Fer (married name Van Der Linden) may have been going to South Africa to show her 4 month baby to relatives. However I could not find Paul Fer in South Africa.

I did see that wife Margaret Maud was calling herself a widow - but at present I am unsure she really knows Paul is dead, or is just speculating that he is.

Paul and Margaret (Maggie) had three children - Rene Eugene. Yvonne Marguerite and Eileen, who was a baby of one month in 1921.

I do find it unusual that there is a complete silence in the newspapers of this incident, particularly as Paul was an otherwise unremarkable middle class man, employing servants, and with a reasonably lucrative business.

thank you Debra!
I will see if I can get a look-up re the newspapers.

Considering the appetite for 'sensational' news, I was surprised that other county newspapers did not pick the story up.
Paul Fer also disappeared - that is, later records do not place him with his family, so I suspect he and his wife separated, and he could have gone abroad.

best wishes,
Louise
