Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Froxfield Burial Lookup requests-OSGOOD
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 18:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have recently been looking at findmypast.co.uk and discovered a James Osgood buried in Froxfield in 1788. I do not see a DOB associated with him.
Does anyone have access to more information associated with either the cemetery or death records?

I am also interested in Mary Osgood who is also buried in Froxfield b.1727, d.1810. And John Osgood b.1796 and d.1823.

Thanks for reading!
All the best,
Karina

Armed Forces / US military document (1836/1839/1857)
« on: Thursday 04 December 14 16:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I'm not quite sure where to post this topic, but the rootschat community has always been so helpful, that I felt that it was worth asking the question.

I have a document for a Scottish relative who immigrated to America, and then served in the US army. Most of the columns on his army record are pretty evident: he entered in 1836 and finished his service in 1839. On this document, on his "line" across the "died, deserted, apprehended" columns is written "P.O. May 22/57".
Would anyone have any idea what this might mean? I can only guess that it is his death date (perhaps it has been noted to stop other people from claiming his pension or other benefits) or perhaps a pension or a land grant that was claimed at this date?

I noted that entries for other men  (on the same page, different lines) DID include someone who deserted but had a similar "P.O" entry, and others who had NOT deserted and had this entry. Not all the men listed on the page had such an entry, so perhaps not all the men could be tracked after they left the army?

Thanks for any ideas.

Other Countries / Re: Calcutta, INDIA: Scots Cemetery look-up
« on: Wednesday 26 November 14 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello and thanks for the replies.

Thanks for the sites, Ruskie. Sadly the first one had no dates (just a mention of Anne D'Rozario being buried there), and the second (with the monument photos) did not list her.
I did find another site, which showed photos of the state of the cemetery and I'm not surprised that there may be some known graves that cannot be read, as there seems to be significant degradation to some of the monuments.

http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/296998/details/india+kolkata+karaya+road+scottish+cemetery/

The fact that D'Rozario was NOT a very Scottish name was exactly what caught my attention!! I could only think that she may have been originally Scottish, and married internationally. I am looking for an executor of a wealthy Scottish Doctor's will in 1798, so I assume that I am looking for a person with sufficient literacy, and have presumed at this point that she must have been European (in 1798). Apart from this assumption, and the mention of her name, I know nothing else about her (not her age, nor her martial state, nor the length of time she spent in india).....and any information on the person buried in the Scots cemetery or another contenders would be very welcome.

Dawnsh, would you have any more information on the Mrs Ann d'Rozario who died in 1805?

All the best,
Karina

Other Countries / Calcutta, INDIA: Ann De Rozario / De Rozar (1798)
« on: Tuesday 25 November 14 13:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find information on a certain Ann de Rozario or De Rozar that is the executor of an estate in 1798 in Calcutta.
She must have been able to read and write in order to be executor (I assume), and was residing in Calcutta in 1798. I'm wondering if anyone has information on such a person.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Hello,

I was wondering whether anyone had access to the indexes of the Scots Cemetery in Calcutta, India.
In particular, I have found that there was an Ann d'Rozario who had been buried there, but unfortunately, I have NO idea of the date, or anything else about this Ann d'Rozario.

Thanks for taking the time.

Hi Jane,

Excellent! Thanks so much for the newspaper information. I have been looking for something like that, but had not found it. Would you mind telling me which site you used to find it?

Thanks for the other information, I'll start looking into that.
Thanks for taking the time.

Hi Jane,

Thanks for your post & thanks for taking the time to share the information.

Yes, I do have this information but I'm afraid that that's where my info ends (I have info on a dispute on her will after her death, so I know that the death date is for my ancestor). But that's where I'm stuck.

All the best,

Sussex Lookup Requests / Memorial Inscription in Brighton, Sussex (1895)

Hi everyone,

One of my ancestors, Emily Sarah Lloyd died on 7 March, 1895 in Brighton, Sussex (birth date unknown, but around 1808). I was wondering whether anyone who has access to memorial inscriptions to this area might be kind enough to verify if she was buried in Brighton.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Highgate cemetery lookup
« on: Friday 28 September 12 15:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I found a biography of the second husband of a VERY elusive ancestor on http://www.hydrobharat.nic.in/pdf/charting.pdf

The text of interest is:-
"CAPTAIN RICHARD LLOYD Captain Richard Lloyd I.N. Born in 1798, Lloyd joined the East India Surveying Establishment under Captain Daniel Ross, whom he eventually succeeded. Until then he remained his first assistant. Captain Lloyd died on the 19 th of November 1877, aged 79. An old surveyor and brother officer, writing of his last days, says “I had seen him as lately as November 5 th , and then he had quite recovered his memory, articulation, clear sight, and as we spread charts before him, he pointed out with his poor helpless fingers – deformed and twisted with rheumatic gout – various circumstances connected with his former work, and seemed to retain as vivid a recollection of all he had surveyed as far south as Mergui, as if he had just come on shore. It is curious, however, he had never kept a single copy of any of his charts.” “On the morning of the 20 th November I received a note to tell me he had died the previous day, and on Saturday, the 25 th , I was one of the seven persons who stood at the grave in Highgate Cemetery; and there the good old veteran rests, with scarcely room for a headstone to indicate the spot, so closely packed are all the spaces. I think we might inscribe to his memory, ‘Sans peur et sans reproche.’ His works will be his only memorial – they are surely the best.”

So.....my ancestor re-married (to Richard Lloyd) in 1854 and subsequently died before the 1861 census, as the above Richard Lloyd was widowed again by then. Both their first spouses died in India.

**I was wondering whether anyone had access to the Highgate cemetery inscriptions, and could find Richard Lloyd's inscription (perhaps the above text suggests that there is none?)? Even more specifically, I am wondering whether he shared a graveplot with his second wife Emily Sarah (my ancestor), and if his inscription includes her information.**

Thanks for taking the time to read.
All the best,
Karina
