Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: Gravestone inscriptions Myddle parish Charles Davies
« on: Tuesday 16 January 18 11:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
There is no recorded grave stone for Charles DAVIES at Myddle but the burial register shows he was aged 21.
There is a grave stone for Mary DAVIES aged 25 who died 24 May 1877 the daughter of David & Eliz. DAVIES of Tan House, Marton.  This is situated behind the church on the left of the path leading to the new graveyard.
Could Mary be a younger sister of Charles?

Shropshire / Re: Swain family (-ies) in and near Condover
« on: Tuesday 16 January 18 10:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Tony

There was a SWAIN family living in Condover in the 1950's when Mrs Swain was one of the cooks at the village school.  They had at least one son but he moved out of Shropshire when he started work.  There is at least one Swain family buried in the small cemetery at Condover.

With regard to the haulage business you are probably thinking of 'Swains of Stretton' which was located at Church Stretton for many years in the mid to late 1900's but has now relocated.  Their former yard is now a housing estate and the road is named Swain's Meadow.  If you do a search on the Internet for Swains of Stretton you will find several entries, one of which has the heading 'A History of Road Transport' and this will tell you a bit about the company.

Shropshire / Re: A Contradiction Beatrice Cotton (1767) Monument St Mary's Market Drayton
« on: Wednesday 07 September 16 17:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello Peter

I have persuaded a friend from Market Drayton to have a look at the monument inside St Mary’s Church and this is the text on it:-

“Sacred to the memory of Beatrice the daughter of William COTTON and Beatrice BIRCH.  The wife 1st of William JUSTICE Esq of Albrighton Hall, Staffordshire then of Jasper PECK Esq of Cornish in the County of Debigh.
The mother of many children in who’s virtues and affection she found a consolation for the various disappointments she sustained in her fortune.
She was also the great granddaughter and niece to William COTTON Esq of Bellaport where she was born in 1688.
She died in this town in 1767.”

The reference to Albrighton Hall, Staffordshire creates even more questions.  I can’t find any reference that fits that but there is an Albrighton Hall just north of Shrewsbury plus another Albrighton Hall in the east of Shropshire near Shifnal and not far from Staffordshire so you will need to work on that a bit.

For your information Bellaport is located about 4.5 miles NNE of Market Drayton.

The second and third paragraphs above create their own questions. What were the ‘various disappointments she sustained in her fortune’ and how could she be the ‘great granddaughter and niece’ of William COTTON?  Something else for you to struggle with!

Shropshire / Re: Mary price of Preston Gubbals
« on: Saturday 21 April 12 14:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello Janice

The parish register gives the additional information that the parents were from Bomere Heath, which at that time was in the Preston Gubbals parish, and that the father was a labourer.

Mary had a sister named Sarah who was christened on the same day so they may have been twins but I don't think there is anything in the original register to suggest this.

They also had a younger sister named Elizabeth who was baptised on 15 Feb 1829.

I can't see a burial at Preston Gubbals for either of the parents James or Sarah and they are not in the Leaton Burial Register which started in 1860 so you will need to do a wider search for their burials.

They don't appear in the Preston Gubbals Marriage Register and I can't see them in the Shropshire Marriage Index but this is far from complete.

It would appear that you are going to have to wade round adjacent parishes to find the marriage.
