Lancashire / Re: Boond St, Salford
« on: Thursday 07 March 24 00:29 GMT (UK)  »
I am currently researching the Boond family. Son of a labourer, Thomas was baptized in Rostherne in 1739. As this is where the Leigh family attended church, they must have known each other. Thomas and his brother Peter came to Manchester in 1775 to purchase part of Ancoats from the Leigh family (I have no idea where they got the money) and then sold it to developers, thus igniting the Industrial Revolution. Bntil he went bankrupts.oth Peter and Thomas had children, and Thomas's son, John, held property in Salford until he went bankrupt.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Gathorne

I am looking into the early Gathorne family (1640-1700) in Manchester and Salford. Anyone got any of this family on their trees? I am trying to unravel some very complex relationships as outlined in the Court Leet and Port Moot records of Manchester and Salford but I have hit a wall. If only I could find the will of Miles Gathorne (1687), which Ancestry says exists but the records office says it doesn't!

John Nowell was a stonemason, and with his brother Joseph followed the civil engineering projects from Macclesfield to Widnes to Liverpool to Chorley to Todmorden to Salford. They were the elder sons of clothier Isaac Nowell (Joseph remarried after 1837 so I have his father's name and profession). John andJoseph were born in the early years of the 19th century. Both brothers had children during their nomadic journey and you can follow their jobs together. I traced Isaac's ancestry but there seems to be no clear link to the civil engineering Nowell branch. That family, descended I am sure from a Benjamin, appear to originate outside Dewsbury, perhaps more closely related to the Nowell senior branch in Lancashire.

I would love to see the picture of the inscription; thanks.

It will take a little while to find where I filed them, so bear with me; it has been some years since I last looked at my Nowell ancestors. The Macclesfield Canal builders link have the mistake.......all of the builders are descended from a Benjamin Nowell but again, it will take a bit of time to delve into details on this too. Give me a couple of days.

If you can look in the church for the inscription please let me know as I would love to see if my Nowell (John) was related to the builders.

There were a large number of Nowell civil engineers. The information on the Macclesfield Canal link which you may have read is a start, but I should warn you there is a mistake in the ancestry they quote. There is a book about civil engineers in the UK in Google Books which has an entry about the Nowells, but several pages are missing. I found a hard copy of the book and copied these pages which I have somewhere and I can scan them and send them to you if you would like.

The way I traced my Dewsbury stone-mason Nowells (and I am now confident their name was a coincidence; they were not closely related to their namesakes) was to follow the births of their children, through Macclesfield, Widnes, Liverpool, Chorley, and in 1841 Todmorden.

I am looking for any info on Mr Liptrott other than what is readily available in the most easily accessible records. The family seem to flit around south Lancashire from Charnock to Liverpool. Any unpublished stuff more than welcome!

Thanks in advance.
