Family History Beginners Board / Re: Moves between parishes

Thanks Youngtug

The way I read it was that after 1795, begging or application for relief would indeed have had to occurred for a removal order to be initiated...

...BUT that Settlement papers would ALWAYS be required in order to legally enter a new parish...it was the settlement papers that I was interested in finding

Maggie - Thanks for the help. Nothing on A2A on searching by name I'm afraid

Diddymiller - will check ERO Tx

Thanks both

I am not certain they received poor relief and am sure they moved for very ordinary reasons. However, I thought all inter parish moves had to be approved regardless of reasons?? No?

So was just seeking another type of record to pin down the move date and individuals

Thanks

Can anyone advise where I should look to ascertain the reason my family moved from Hitcham, Suffolk to Hornchurch, Essex ca. 1820?

I am hoping to find records that refer to at least names in the party, but even better would be reasons for the move

I am sure I read once that the parish of settlement had to agree to the move and that they could send back to parish of origin if family needed poor relief? So I'm thinking there may written records that cover all of this?

Online would be best. Or would it be best to visit Essex Record Office?

Thanks

Thanks all
I'll run the tests suggested
I was veering toward FindMyPast, but, although searching for a test ancestor found in the expected Suffolk parish, the parish was not listed on FindMyPast as being one of those covered which seems odd!

Take all points re online trees. Last time I was doing FH stuff (I put down for 6 years) I was using FamilyHistorian...but I now have a Mac...and thought online made some sense

Thanks for your thoughts

Where did you find the 1792 Samuel Rush marriage? Do you use any of the Suffolk indices for sale by SFHS? Just trying to gauge value for money

Your thoughts re the reason for the "shifty" move back to Hitcham to marry match my own

The daughters of Samuel do use Rush Grimwood for themselves at marriage, but Samuel is only referred to as Grimwood. I believe this is because he is already dead by the time of the marriages and so he is either assumed to be Grimwood by the officiating priest (who would know no different in Hornchurch), or the daughter refers to Samuel as Grimwood to lend an air of legitimacy to her own birth and to keep up the general pretence of her parents being married while living in Hornchurch since the 1820s

There was indeed a reversal of the use of "Rush Grimwood" to "Grimwood Rush" on some later census and BMD records in Hornchurch

Thanks

Sue

Its complex, but I believe they are siblings based on scrutiny of a mass of records in Hornchurch (was a year's effort!)...

In essence, beacuse there were only 2 families in Hornchurch >1820 using the unique Rush Grimwood name and all gave birth place (usually) as Hitcham....AND because use of "Rush Grimwood", "Grimwood Rush", "Rush" and "Grimwood" formats between both Hornchurch families varied consistently for both families between census years and on various BMD records (seems they never could decide what their surname should be! The "Rush" bit was dropped by my Grandfather in 1940s)

What I need to do is look for baptisms of James and siblings in the Suffolk baptism index to confirm all have Sarah Grimwood as mother (assuming Samuel Rush won't be mentioned due to illegitimacy)

Can I ask..do you access the Suffolk BI on findmypast? or do you have CDs? I see on findmypast that coverage of parishes does not seem to include Offton and Barking..yet confusingly a (before payment) name search does find Sarah and Samuel! I just want to ensure I get best value for my money

Thanks
