Thank you, everyone, for your positive feedback...I'm very pleased that it may be of some use to fellow Rootschatters. :)

Thanks AlanBoyd (reply #2) , for drawing attention to the alternative source at archive.org. There will very likely be those who prefer archive.org, so your post is very helpful.

Thanks to melba_schmelba too - your observations (reply #3) are also very pertinent.

To download from Google (I didn't), you need to click on the Settings icon (on the right-hand side, near the top of the screen) and select either Download PDF or Download EPUB.

Hi all,

I recently came across a publication on Google Books which could prove useful to Rootschatters researching 18th century London addresses and/or businesses.

It also includes national, international and general business-related information, e.g. details of markets across England and Wales, Hackney Carriage fares, guidance about weights and measures, taxes, international trade , foreign currencies, book-keeping tabulations, etc. (That's why I've posted this in the Common Room rather than in the London & Middlesex section, or elsewhere.)

Published in 1763, it's called The Compleat Compting-House Companion: Or, Young Merchant and Tradesman's Sure Guide.

I think Chapters 10 and 15 could prove particularly useful:

Chapter 10 (which starts on page 182) has a list of businesses - and their location - "in and about London, Westminster, and Southwark".

Chapter 17 (starting on page 344) names and locates religious, public, and other important buildings, as well as "streets, squares, lanes, courts, alleys, yards, rents, wharfs, inns, &c" in "the Cities of London and Westminster, and the Borough of Southwark". (I found it to be a bit more comprehensive than that - it includes an address I was looking for, that was outside the City of London's 'Square Mile' and not in Westminster or Southwark.)

Here's the link (it's rather long...Rootchat's link-shrinking utility didn't seem to work - I kept getting a blank white screen - so if someone could kindly post a shortened link, that would be great ;)):

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=NGFiAAAAcAAJ&pg=PA101&lpg=PA101&dq=google+books+young+merchant+and+tradesman%27s+guide&source=bl&ots=pZKBpCc6dk&sig=ACfU3U0PMyfo0YXftEmFWsyX-4BUheiz8A&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjhifj1wpWEAxUwa0EAHem9A6MQ6AF6BAgmEAM#v=onepage&q=google%20books%20young%20merchant%20and%20tradesman's%20guide&f=false

World War One / Re: Army Service look up.
« on: Friday 02 February 24 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Cragside,

I've checked both Ancestry and Find My Past for you...and they hold these military records for Henry:

Ancestry
UK, British Army World War I Service Records, 1914-1920
A dozen or so pages.
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/324840:1219?tid=&pid=&queryId=dfaa7197-a033-4937-afca-608c4d4907ac&_phsrc=FPN11334&_phstart=successSource

UK, World War l Service Medal and Award Rolls, 1914-1920
1 page.
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/1496110:5119?tid=&pid=&queryId=6707a7ff-514a-45c8-9450-fde6ed85a0ac&_phsrc=FPN11341&_phstart=successSource

Ancestry's results also show the following - but a Fold3.com sub is needed to access it:

UK, Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Soldier Service Records, 1760-1920
These documents seem to relate to his earlier service. I don't have a Fold3 sub so can't tell how many pages there are.

Find My Past
British Army Service Records
Two sets of records, relating to his separate periods of service - appear to be the same as those on Fold3 (6 pages in all on FindMyPast) and some (4 pages) of those on Ancestry.

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM%2FWO96%2F1243%2F196%2F001&parentid=GBM%2FWO96%2F1243%2F1606936

If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry or Find My Past, many public libraries provide free access.

There are also one or two threads here on Rootschat about getting a half-price Ancestry subscription - with links directly to the deals on offer. (Annual Worldwide for £89.99 or Annual UK Premium for £59.99.) For example:

The Common Room / Re: FindMyPast Subscription Renewal

Thank you all very much for passing on your information. I contacted FindMyPast & mentioned they had offered other subscribers 40% off & that I felt the 15% & then 25% off they had offered was unfair as I had been with FindMyPast for over 10 years. I got an email straight back offering 40% off & would I like to upgrade to Premium, so at that price I did ;D

Bingo! Well done, Ellenmai...great result...all's well that ends well.  :)

ADDED: Apologies...I obviously didn't use the 'Quote' facility correctly...the above quote is from Ellenmai at 14:31. (The second set of inverted commas/quote marks are missing too!)

Wow - 40% off!!! :o

I subscribed to FindMyPast for the first time on Black Friday (i.e. Nov 2023) and, with a 25% discount, the Premium sub cost  £149.99.

Everything I'd seen online up until then suggested that's when they gave the best discount, and it's been ages since I last saw them give more than 25% off (if I ever did).

The discount I received was, I guess, the best available to non-subscribers (and I was quite pleased with it)...but now I'm a subscriber, the information in this thread will hopefully prove very useful.

So my thanks to everyone that contributed - I now have a plan for next time! ;D

London and Middlesex / Re: Coroner Inquest Jane Bromley
« on: Saturday 27 January 24 00:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi tempogold,

I can't see anything about Jane's inquest in the British Newspaper Archive (BNA), unfortunately.

I was going to suggest Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre but it would seem that the only newspaper held by them, covering 1869, is the St Pancras Gazette (1866-1939) - an identical holding to the BNA, so maybe that particular newspaper didn't publish anything about the Inquest.

Some Coroners' records are at the London Metropolitan Archives and their "Research Guide 41: Coroners records for London and Middlesex" is at:

https://search.lma.gov.uk/SCRIPTS/MWIMAIN.DLL/162010144/2/2/65?RECORD&UNION=Y

Perhaps you could email them for confirmation as to whether or not they hold the relevant documentation. Their email address (and other contact details) are at:

https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/history-and-heritage/london-metropolitan-archives/about-lma/contact-lma

In the meantime, you might wish to try posting a snip of the Death Certificate's "Cause of Death" section to Rootschat's Handwriting Deciphering Board, in case anyone can help with the bit you can't quite make out - because that could possibly throw some more light on the circumstances surrounding Jane's death.

Good luck,

Hi Josie88,  :)

The British Music Hall Society's research guide might, perhaps, be helpful:

Hi Mark,  :)

I noticed your post's slipped off Rootschat's "Home" page without getting a response. (It was still there, but at the foot of the page, when I started on this.) Displayed on the Board only, it may attract less attention so I thought I'd try and help out.

I'm unable to access censuses at the moment and you seem to have been down that road already, together with exploring marriage records in both the UK and Ireland. A fresh pair of eyes taking at look at those could be useful, so I hope someone else comes along and offers to do that. (Or can suggest other avenues to explore, as I do below.) My response should bump your post back to near the top of the Home page, increasing the chances of others replying to your post.

You mentioned a possible Scandinavian connection, maybe Norwegian. As I know nothing about Scandinavian family history resources, I turned to Auntie Google. That's often my first port of call when I need pointers - although posting on Rootschat is just as valid!

NB: The non-Anc**try/FS websites linked to below (the Scandinavian ones - second, fifth, eighth and ninth links) all appear to be in English; but it's possible their records may not be. The records held by Anc**try and any on FS may also not be in English. But there's always Google Translate and Rootschat to help out in that respect.

First, I googled "norwegian family history records". There were other options on the results page (and I only looked at the first page) but I picked these out, as they may be the best place to start:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/places/europe/norway/

https://www.arkivverket.no/en/find-your-ancestors/tracing-your-ancestry

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Norway_Genealogy

Next, I googled "swedish family history records". Again, there were other options and these are from just the first results page:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/places/europe/sweden/

https://www.arkivdigital.net/swedish-genealogy

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Sweden_Genealogy

Finally, I googled "danish family history records" and took these from the first page:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/places/europe/denmark/

https://www.sa.dk/en/services/records-registries/

https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Denmark_Genealogy

If the none of the links above lead you to the answer you're seeking, you might wish to try googling "icelandic family history records" and "finnish family history records". Although not Scandinavian countries, Iceland and Finland have close ties with Scandinavia, as you may know, so could possibly have some similar family names.

Rgds,
