FreeBMD is a great resource, but it is only an index. How things get indexed is complicated, and you can't be 100% sure of what is on the register entry from the index alone.

When I first started my research I thought the birth dates etc were gospel lol. Have learnt a lot since those days. Have found somewhere my friend can get an adoption birth cert.  This type of search is new to me and learning a lot thanks to help on Rootschat.

Children (in E/W) were not registered under any surname until 1969. What you are seeing is the entry being indexed under the surname of the mother (or father, or both) depending on who is named on the entry and their marital status. If the mother was still using her previous husband's surname then that is the name she will appear under and the name the birth will be indexed as.

Thank you that helps. . I get info from free bmd  could the birth certificate show a different surname as we assume surname incorrect. But then maybe no fathers name will be given he could be unknown . Have found that with one of hubbies ancestors.

Thanks to everyone else for your interest and replies  :)

Thank you everyone very helpful. The lady in question is dead but her daughter is alive, I am doing this for a friend , the cousin of the daughter. All this has only just come to light. My friend only recently discovered her father was adopted by his mothers second husband and is from her first marriage which ended in divorce. There is now some confusion about the lady born several years after the divorce but registered in his name. I am seeking as to her father. It’s complicated but we are uncovering a lot. Certificates could help but I have learnt to my cost it’s not a given all information will be found. People lie.

What country and when did the supposed adoption take place?

England and birth was registered 1938 . What I think could have happened is the child was illegitimate and mother divorced and remarried and new husband adopted her as he had adopted 2 children from her first marriage. It’s all been swept under the carpet and only now surfaced.

Can someone tell me where to go for adoption records. I am not 100% sure the person I am looking for was adopted but it’s highly likely.

Following on from the help you have given me,  my friend told me that he was possibly  in the Navy. I found a John Weatherstone born in 1904 who was in Merchant Navy. How do I go about finding his records to give me more information?

In need of help please. Hoping to find information on the husband of Ivy Wilby.
She married 1926 in Croydon to John R Weatherstone.  It’s highly likely he died before 1939 as Ivy remarried in 1939 to M. Brown.  I found a couple of deaths which could be him but it’s all guesswork until I find more info on John.
