Hi Libby

I took a look in the books not knowing what you really have and found these records. They are in chronological order. Also, there are a couple of trees online that have the wrong place of birth for Claes Anders Adelsköld so I have also found that too. According to the books he left for Gothenburg from Alingsås in 1884. His father's life was an interesting read. There are no other records of Claes Anders to do with his sea-faring other than the records you have. I saw that he was in Australia in 1875 and 1877. He became a seaman in Gävle and lived in Stockholm between 1859 and 1878. Looking for records in Stockholm are very difficult to locate and I was unable to locate any apart from 2 which can be seen here:

Just write "adelsk" in lastname and "1854" in dateofbirth you should be able to see them.

and I wonder if you know of any ways to search Swedish police records to find out what someone was charged and/or convicted of?

There are magistrate books online somewhere but the parish would have to be known. Great photos by the way.

Are the old newspapers being digitised much?

Here is a good site - in Swedish though:

I hope you hadn't already spent a lot of time on it! But could you just tell me what he is trying to say in the second paragrah?
Thanks Ian for sending the link.

Cheers Libby.

I had just started so no worries.
Here is my tranlsation of the second paragraph. Quite difficult to translate coherently:

"Australia is a country where everything is very badly off, can even be romantic, beautiful and magnificent, and the people the same. Scraped together, like the old tribe was a 100 years ago, they have become criminals and during the gold rush had become the worst section from all the world's parts, has this relationship not disappeared to make its mark on the growing population and the young Australia is much inferior than the young America was during its time when George Washington governed and you cannot really think the possibility that Australia could produce a man comparable to him."

And here is the other translation with help from a kind Dane.

Kirsten Jensdatter
Sejlflod*, with                   *a parish in Aalborg amt, Fleskum herred
her brother Anders
Gaarn in Wester(øe)
  ----
Jens Sejlflod,
fom the mainland (Jylland), and
the mother, now late
Margrethe Anders-
datter Gaarn*               *she died June 16, 1816, age 50 (ops.85)
of Westerøe parish

So Sejlflod is a surname given to Kirstens father Jens, who probably was born there.

Hi
Just like to add that the article in the Finnish newspaper is Swedish.
If you approve I can see if I can find some unknown info about him here in Sweden. To do so I will be needing his name and his father's name also the parish and some dates.

I have a newspaper article my great grandfather wrote and had published in a Californian Scandinavian paper in the late 1890's.

Hi Libby
According to this site I found, this letter was printed in a Finland newspaper on 22 Feb 1889:

I presume you know all about your G grandfather?
