World War Two / Re: royal artillery tracer card - can anyone decipher it
« on: Sunday 10 May 20 17:04 BST (UK)  »
First of all, a huge thanks to you lot for all the info and taking your time to read.
Secondly, I have very little, if not zero info on him, he was my maternal grandfather who remarried after my grandmother died and my mother was 12, she went to stay with her aunt, he started a new life in Scotland, apparently.

Thanks again, I'll try and research the units you've sent me an then I'll send for his service record, which is always fun as MOD doesn't accept credit cards or cash and I live in Spain!!

World War Two / royal artillery tracer card - can anyone decipher it
« on: Saturday 09 May 20 19:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I've just downloaded my grandfather's Royal Artillery tracer card from ww2 hoping it would give me information, it's just given me a headache!!

Is there anyone knowledgeable here that can decipher his for me. I think the first line on the right-hand side says "1st  MTN REGT" which could be 1st mountain regiment, for the rest, i'm having real problems.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

World War Two / Re: Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve HMS STOUR

Thanks Hugh for the info.

The admiralty's reply has only left more questions than it answers, as per usual with this game. I would really like to know why he was MID'd but I fear I will never know. My father told me he received a medal from the Norwegian government for rescuing people from a torpedoed ship, so it maybe something to do with that. But until that day...I can only hope to find Stour's war diary. But then again, if he was skipper..who would have reported his actions for the MID?.

World War Two / Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve HMS STOUR

Hi,
I'm trying to find any info on the STOUR which was a requisitioned trawler, I've "trawled" the internet for photos etc, but nothing.

My grandfather was the officer in command in 1940/1 and during that time won a mention in despatches which was announceed in the new years honours list and was published in the London Gazette of 1st Jan 1941. He was Acting temporary Skipper George Henry Smith T/S 531.

The problem is, I don't know why he won it. I think it may have been in relation to Dunkirk, as his daughter, my aunt, is still alive and swears, as did my deceased dad, hee'd been given an award for Dunkirk as she saw the paper when she was a kid. I've been told he was issued a MID by the Naval historical dept, and I have the Gazette copy.

Doea anyone know anything about the STOUR, have photos or know how I find the contents of the mentioned in despatches.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Cheers MaxD,

I've got the attestaion but I didn't see the pencil mark above !!

The 977172 David Walters is him.

The fact that this is near Southend on Sea could well tie in with another important piece of info I discarded as having nothing to back it up..this could well be that thing..

Thanks a lot to everyone.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.

He worked at Langwith colliery, in Derbyshire, before the war as a colliery labourer.

As for the M.H. I can only put it down to an error of hearing at the time as Maxd said. Even so I'm having trouble with finding 22nd batteries. I thought this certificate would be then end of a mystery, when in reality its just the beginning of yet another!!

Hi,
thanks for the quick reply. The certificate states GUNNER 22nd M.H. Royal Artillery. I've seen some HB (heavy battery) etc but no M. H...

Hi,

My mothers birth certificate has her father down as 22nd M. H. Royal Artillery, the letters are clear so its not a translation problem.

Does anyone know what the M. H. stands for?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Thanks very much. I thought it might have been breaking and entering as his father was also imprisoned for the same thing.
