The Common Room / Re: Death at Sea 1929 – any more info?

Well that just goes to show what an extra pair of eyes can do!  Yes, I'm sure that must be the right person.

I'd looked and looked for further information but I think I must have been typing in my 'hoped for' forename, which wasn't John!

The Common Room / Death at Sea 1929 – any more info?
« on: Sunday 14 April 24 19:26 BST (UK)  »
The ‘death at sea’ index (BT 334) on FindMyPast lists a death in December 1931 for a J O’Toole, although the image shows it was actually December 1929.  The entry is then suffixed with the letter E, as are many others.   Other than this there is no further information, not even a ships name.

Can anyone advise how I might find out more?

The various records offices etc don't generally provide the family history information for free, so it's likely that FindMyPast has an exclusive contract allowing them to publish the images.

There are no further details about the apprentice record, unfortunately, but its just an index from a CD compiled by the Family History Society from records held at Leicester Archives, so there may be more information on the original document.

The accompanying notes say:

"Parish Poor Law Index 1598 – 1940s

This is a copy of the original index produced in 2003 on the first Poor Law CD and covers all the Poor Law cases found on the 20,000 Index Cards in the ROLLR*.   The information has been extracted from records found in the Parish Chests of the individual parishes
".

I can't speak for Colin, but personally I don't believe that this (your) William is the grandson of Bartin Burton.

The existence of the removal order indicates that as well as being illiterate and a labourer (as you already pointed out) he was also receiving or at risk of needing parish relief.

Bartin's PCC will is available online and does mention a son John, but it seems to me that people have simply jumped on it without question or further investigation.  Good for you for not doing the same!

The only other records involving Oakham appear to be these:

1765 - Settlement Certificate for William & Mary Burton.  Parishes involved Oakham & Exton
1777 - Settlement Certificate for Daniel & Ann Burton.  Parishes involved Oakham & Buckminster

In case this is of any help, my Leicester Poor Law CD has the following:

Leicester Quarter Sessions – 1830 Translation session
18 Jun 1830 Removal Order between Leicester St Mary & Oakham, Rutland
William Burton and wife Alice Burton plus the following children:
William 17, John 15, Robert 13, Jane 11, James 9, Sarah 8, Mary 6, Alice 4, Andrew 2, Thomas 10-weeks

It looks like Oakham appealed, but the removal was confirmed in the 1830 Michaelmas session.

Its only an index so the details are very limited, although there doesn’t appear to be a surviving settlement examination

There is also an 1801 apprentice record in Oakham for William Burton aged 15 (born c1786) to Thomas Clarke, who appears to also be of Oakham.

I'll keep looking for anything else that may be helpful.

I should have added that you can look up registration districts via FreeBMD.  Linthorpe and Middlesbrough were both part of Stockton RD until 1875:
