Northumberland / Re: charlton surname

With the help of another researcher we found that Thomas Charlton born April 22 1810 may have had the parents THOMAS Charlton and Margaret Thompson.  The baptism of Thomas Charlton 1810 (and many of his siblings are similar) refers to him as “2nd son of parents - Thomas Charlton (Joiner from Queen Street Native of Mitford Parish) and Margaret Thompson (Native of this Parish).”  Their firstborn son was John born June 1808.  Thomas and Margaret Thompson married Sept 1807.  Other children we found born to these parents were; John 1808, Thomas 1810, Margaret 1812, Peter 1815, William 1819, Joseph 1821, John 1826 and Margaret 1829.  Margaret Thompson Charlton (Mother died 1868 in Castle Ward, Northumberland).

This index England Marriages, 1538–1973 states that Thomas's father was actually Thomas, not William:

Name Thomas Charlton
Spouse's Name Ann Scott
Event Date 1840
Event Place Newcastle Upon Tyne, St.Nicholas, Northumberland, England
Father's Name Thomas Charlton
Spouse's Father's Name William Scott

So,the parents as previously reported to be William Charlton and Mary Skatt may be Totally Wrong.

Hi all -
I am going to jump in here also because I am currently searching Thomas Charlton born 1810 who married Ann  Scott and had parents of William and Mary Skatt.  I totally agree with all of the information from Familysearch.org that may be incorrect.  There are also many family trees on Ancestry.com that have conflicting information as well and it is driving me crazy !

I have found a couple of entries that stated Thomas Charlton was born 1810 to Thomas Charlton NOT William Charlton.  I have not been able to find any record of his birth, even though I found entries that he was  born Aug 18, 1810 at Sparrow House in Seaton Burn.  I found his father William born 1784 in Seaton Burn and married to Mary Skatt 1809 in Sparrow House (so Thomas was born shortly afterwards)   Other children born to William and Mary Skatt (per Ancestry.com) were Isabella 1815, Jane 1818, Robert 1821, Richard William 1824 and Barbara 1828.  William Charlton died Jan 1873 in Newcastle according to these family trees posted.  Mary Skatt died April 1850.

Someone posted on Ancestry that William Charlton (b. 1784) was born to William Charlton (b. 1751 in Ponteland, Northumberland) died July 31 1818 in Ponteland, and married Mary Reay Nov 23 1786 i Ponteland.

This William's parents were George Charlton b. 1721 Berwick Hill, died 1773, and married Mary Milburn Nov 27, 1746 in Ponteland.

This tree goes on that George's parents were James Charlton b. 1675 in Hexham, died 1755 in Ponteland and married Isabel Errington Jan 18 1709 in Ponteland.

Continuing with this tree (from Ancestry) James' parents were James Charlton b. 1645 in Simonburn, and married Elizabeth Wilkinson Jun 7 1666 in Hexham.

Finally James' parents were Thomas Charlton b. 1617 in Hexham and married Isabel Leadbitter Sept 20 1635 in Hexam.

All the above is from the ROGERS Family Tree on Ancestry.com

My dilemma is that Thomas Charlton born Aug 18, 1810 at Sparrow House supposedly died in 1866 (same year and month as his wife Ann Scott) according to all posted records on Familysearch and Ancestry,  BUT ....  he appears on the census in 1901 (living with his son and family in 1901 at age 86 which puts his birth at 1815 instead of 1810/1811.

Thomas Charlton (born 1840) did marry twice -Eleanor Chapman married 1863 (she died 1878) and then he married Eleanor Greener, formery Havis in 1878.

All the above is from Ancestry family trees and Familysearch posted data.

I am in the early stages of this research, so I have no documents yet for proof.

Sorry for the LONG post !

I looked back 2 generations and found No Eleanor.   Hmmmm....    ??  Unless it is a middle name that I do not have for one of their family members.

Yes, Scott is so common.  That's why this is so difficult.  I am also trying to collaborate with the many family trees posted to Ancestry.com
Thank you for your replies. :)

Yes, I know the census did not mention Wallsend.  Perhaps the family member who gave the information did not know?  My source is:

England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name John Scott
Gender Male
Birth Date 01 Oct 1801
Baptism Date 22 Nov 1801
Baptism Place Wallsend,Northumberland,England
Father John Scott
Mother Ann Grey
FHL Film Number 95029

Jen -

After much researching (I found various John Scott's born to 3/4 different sets of parents) I have concluded through census records that he was born in 1801.  One Ancestry.com family tree showed October 1801, so I am going with that until I can prove otherwise and his parents were shown as John Scott and Ann Gray/Grey.

  Also found this:
England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 John Scott born Oct 1 1801 to John Scott and Ann Gray/Grey and baptised in Wallsend on Nov 22 1801.  To date I have these parents as his, but no further confirmation from any other records (marriage for example). Which would prove his parents were indeed John and Ann Gray/Grey.

I do have them on all on the census.  1841, 1851, 1861, and John died 1870 as Frances is a widow in 1871.  John Scott is such a common name, it has been difficult to find his exact parents.
