The Common Room / Re: Tracing back wrong info on Ancestry

There are also family stories handed down that get taken as gospel, till research shows it is wrong.

Almost every line of my family has two brothers arriving in Australia and settling in different parts, (qld and NSW) but in reality the NSW branch traces to Manchester the Qld to Devon. Back to 1600s no link found.

And I’ve traced my gg grandfathers siblings to their death in England.

But both families have that same story.

I'm always getting sidelined by something I discover, and from very idle curiosity have climbed up and down the trees of only distantly related people, in more detail than I really needed to. But - isn't that just the way we are all wired up? Insatiable curiosity!

Guilty  ;D
Problem is they are the ones in my tree who were either very good, ie all lining up to be married, baptised and buried tidily...or...were a bit naughty and ended up first in the magistrates court and then in the papers. ;D ;D
Found one today, cousin umpteen times removed accused of nicking a pair of trousers, a vest, a door mat and a  cup and saucer from his sister whom he was lodging with.  It might sound  funny today but in the 1880's it was a big enough deal for her to have him arrested.

And at one time enough to get him a free cruise to Australia.

I was wondering if anyone else ever finds themselves looking at records and getting sidetracked by people who are nothing to do with you or your research?

Tonight I'm looking at marriage bann records for a so many times removed aunt.

The bann below theirs, 19 May 1903, is for an Arthur Mercer and an Edith Postill. Arthur's father is listed as being (deceased) but Edith's is (dec?)

I'd love to know the story behind that question mark! What happened to Edith's dad and why did they think he was probably dead, but were not certain enough to say for sure?

It's one of those things that are really interesting, but because it's not my family I haven't really got the spare time to look into it.

Anyone else ever find that sort of thing happening to them?

Frequently.

Currently spending way too much time trying to link

Charles Pope VC with Charles Alfred Witting Pope (from Dorset), if you look at photos of them you assume they are related. The second one married my Gradfathers cousin. So no real close connection. I stumbled on the VC winner because he served with the nephew of one of great grandads brother in law. Talk about off track. But that then lead to looking at a cousin of grandads second wife, the cousin was another VC winner.

So might say I'm a little off track at the moment.

As a small child I was somewhat bewildered by the fact that my mother had a Granny Frost, who wasn't her real granny but was that of her two big sisters. I was too young to work out the implications of this. My mum's real granny was called Granny Smith, which we all know is, in fact, an apple.

Hooked from then onwards.....

I had a few of those, seems half my ancestors married more than once.

It has also lead to some confusion with other family members. One was insistand for years that my great grandfather had the nickname "Genge" whereas in fact Greatgrandmother had married a second time to mane named Matthew Genge but this relative thought when everyone mentioned "Pop Genge" it was just a nickname, took a bit orpf persuading.

I guess I was lucky.

I had a maternal great grandmother, born 1888 died 1973 who was a sharp as a tack. And she had known three of her grandparents. Gives you a pretty good head start really.

I had my two maternal grandparents well into the 1990s who I saw pretty much every day, most of that side was secret. Also a full complement of great Aunts and Uncles on that side, 10 all up, and saw them regularly at least a few times a year.

Paternal side was bit trickier, both grandparents dead before I was born, but knew grandads twin, born 1883, into my teens, and some of his other siblings as well.

Had a bit of material passed down, some of which now seems to have been wrong.

Big question is when and where.

Either govt or possibly the cousin.

Occupation Interests / Re: Domestic Chaplain to Royalty

Another question.

Most entries show one to be a domestic Chaplain, but when I look at the information for the Prince he is shown as a Royal Chaplain.

Can anyone assist with what the requirements were to be appointed as domestic Chaplain to a Prince, and what duties would it entail.

I've got a couple in my tree. But they were clergy around Dorset and/or Devon.

I was once told that it was purely a methodology to provide someone who had found favour with the Royal Family with added income. But no idea how true that is.
