I did a little more playing with FTM, I actually an export to complete, the result was a txt file (.ged) and no media files, but when I looked inside I could see it had filenames for photos.

I imported this into the myheritage application with no serious issues, and it pulled in the photos.

The only problem is that it did not pull over all the record scans in my tree, I can understand why but it is a pain.

Perhaps I will let it lapse, then see if they make me an offer.

I use ancestry with a full subscription and FTM (for local backups really, the website is far more useable).

Ancestry is big but still I often fall into holes and have to ask for lookups on FindMyPast here, sometimes even the free data on familysearch fills the gap.

So ideally I would like to export tree and all media intact into a program that can sync with say FindMyPast (and FS if possible).

I have tried the various export options in FTM, but most of the options just crash every time.

Is what I want possible, should I persevere with FindMyPast and try getting ancestry to fix it?

Or do I just renew at ancestry, presumably they are open to negotiation :)

Many thanks - very interesting.

Nothing springs out of Ancestry, but certainly an interesting lead, I shall have to get a look at the docs to see if I can decipher it, there is at least one Montana in Utah, but nothing large.

Thanks for all the information Gortonboy, it all lines up and makes sense, still leaves the mystery of why he signed up in Canada claiming to be a sailor.

The males seemed all keen to be in the army at any opportunity, I wonder if it was a long standing family tradition?

This leaf of the my tree is there because it contains my mothers cousin, I can go back to the CSM Douglas, but cannot work out his parents and hence the link over to the unknown father of Thomas Phythian in my line.

Don't suppose the military records you have show the next generation up?

Thanks, good to know there is a very similar person to be careful of, I don't think the DGP born in 1888 can be the one who signed up in 1900.

I only know my DGP, or possibly a third DGP signed up in 1900, I don't have a FindMyPast subscription, I shall have to get the detail next freebie Friday.

My DGP was son of another DGP (b Cork 1858), shown as a Soldier in 1891, but living in Liverpool, maybe he was the CSM from the West India regiment and I have messed up somewhere.

Still puzzled over my DGP, after returning to Canada injured he disappears from the records, oral history has him marrying a Daisy in Liverpool and sailing on the Baltic, but I can turn up nothing.

I was wondering if the RN records could be turned up of a guy who served in the Canadian forces, and listed 5 yrs service in the RN in his attestation papers.

He was Douglas George Phythian (b 6 Apr 1884, Omagh Co, Tyrone, Ireland), he turns up in a few places.

In Toxteth 1891
Possibly joining the 4th Liverpool regiment in 1900.
In Winnipeg in 1909
Joining Canadian army in 1914
Shipping back to Canada injured in 1915

Maybe this is a clue.

There was a Thomas baptised in Flixton in 1821, his parents were James Shawcross [occupation butcher] and Mary Irlam. And the reason that the mothers maiden name was on the baptism is that they did not marry till 1823.

So maybe Hannah was illegitimate too, although if that was an issue why did Thomas get baptised?

Not for James, Sarah [Rogerson] and John Shawcross were busy, they baptized 6 there.
