Not exactly a gaffe, more like ignoring the obvious. Spent AGES looking for great grandad's birthdate. It was on the front page of the family Bible held by my cousin. I'd even ordered a couple of possibles from GRO.......

There's a brass in Goldcliff Church commemorating the great flood. An interesting account of the event in Roy Palmer's "Tales of Old Monmouthshire", Logaston Press.

I got very upset finding two g.g. aunts "hauling chains" in an ironworks. 10 and 11 years of age.

So what am I supposed to do? Fly to the UK from Australia every time I need a cert? Demand to see parish registers (if I can track them down)!! In past years I have been lucky enough to see original parish registers, though few and far between!!! I doubt whether I will ever get back to the UK again, so do I give up on my research? NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! >:( >:( >:(

Rosie I know absolutely nothing about the 1939 register! I've seen mention of it many times but my one attempt to access came to nothing. Probably doing something wrong! Any advice gratefully received!! Thank you for your reply.
