Armed Forces / Re: Do these Uniforms confirm their identities?
« on: Tuesday 16 January 24 10:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi LindowMan,
Great to hear from you. I had been in touch with Robert & Joan Moss in the early 2000's. Joan was Gordon's cousin and they sent me a copy of the Fraser Family History 1783-2003 in 2007 and I shared my information with them. That contained the same photo of JLM although cropped (suggesting they came from different prints). William Harold Fraser married Matilda Evelyn McCallum who was the sister of my great-grandmother Phoebe Annie McCallum. I don't know anything about the doc you have on Loughborough University stationery. Shoot me a private message and we'll take it from there.
Best wishes

Australia / Completed: Children of British soldier not in WA BMD register
« on: Saturday 13 September 14 23:51 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Cando & Jebber.
I had a quick look at Findmypast at the local library yesterday and found baptisms for George A & Elizabeth, although there were 2 for George A which was weird, probably an error by a transcriber. I will have a look for the GRO index records next time.
Many thanks Andrew

Australia / Children of British soldier not in BMD register
« on: Saturday 13 September 14 02:23 BST (UK)  »
Corporal George Hayman married Catherine Dalton at the Catholic Church, Perth on 11 May 1858. George was serving with the 1st Battalion, 12th Regiment of Foot and is believed to have participated in the storming of the Eureka Stockade in 1854.

Their marriage appears in the online WA BDM register and I have the certificate, but I cannot find the births of son George Augustus Hayman born c.1861 or daughter Elizabeth Bertha Hayman born c.1862 in WA before the regiment moved east and eventually to NZ for the Maori wars? I'm also on the search for another daughter Jane Belinda Hayman born c.1864/5 maybe SA, VIC or even NZ?

Any help much appreciated. Is it normal for the births of children to men serving in the British Army to not be in the state registers? Children born after his discharge in 1866 do appear in the NSW register.

Renfrewshire / ORR, John & Thomas - Brothers?
« on: Wednesday 20 August 14 14:56 BST (UK)  »
The 1851 census shows John Orr aged 26 (baker employing 2 men), living with wife Janet and daughter Janet at 99 Causeyside Street, Paisley. John was convicted of robbery & assault in 1857 and sent to Western Australia, wife Janet and daughters Ann & Janet followed in 1864. As yet I have not been able to find the marriage of John & Janet, though there is a marriage between John Orr and Jean Paterson 14/10/1843 which may prove to be this couple (I do realise that Jessie and Janet are sometimes interchanged, but not usually Jean).

I did however find a John Orr and Thomas Orr (both bakers) aged 18 and 19 respectively, in the 1841 census living at 46 Moss Street, Paisley. I believe it is this Thomas that marries Mary Ann Ritchie in 1847 and appears (already a widower) with 2yr old son James in the home of his father-in-law James Ritchie in the 1851 census. He remarries soon after in 1851 to Jane Stevenson and they appear in subsequent censuses until 1891. Thomas dies in 1892 and his death register entry confirms the two marriages, trade as master baker and parents as James Orr and Agnes Madden, son James from the first marriage is the informant. I haven't been able to find a marriage of James and Agnes, nor the births of Thomas or John to a couple with these names.

Do you think 1841 John & Thomas and 1851 John & Thomas the same men? Are Thomas and John brothers?

This is one of those cases where a hypothesis all fits together nicely but to-date there is no "smoking gun" in the form of supporting evidence.

And just to throw in a bit more intrigue - in the 1851 census, John & Janet's elder daughter Ann age 6 is staying at 20 Great Hamilton Street, Paisley in the home of her uncle Alexander Borland and his wife Mary. There are stepchildren in the household with the surname Houston. I know this is definitely Ann because John & Janet's son James b.1854 appears in the Borland household in the 1861 census flagged as Alexander's nephew. How are the Orrs / Borlands related?

Hi Sandra,

I made a great new discovery today – I found the Orr family in the 1851 Census of Scotland.
John Orr aged 26, b. Lanarkshire, Scotland, baker employing 2 men; Janet Orr aged 28, b. Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, wife; Janet Orr aged 3 mths, b. Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, daughter; living at 99 Causeyside Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.
Ann Orr aged 6, b. Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland is listed in the household of her uncle and aunt Alexander & Mary Borland who lived at 20 Great Hamilton Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. The two homes are less than 700m apart.

I am certain this is your Ann (Annie) because the subsequent 1861 Census shows a nephew James Orr (who was crossed off the passenger list - see original post) aged 7 and living with the Borlands at 6 South Campbell Street, Paisley.

There are step-children in the Borland household indicating that the Houston children are Mary’s from a previous marriage. A little added hump in working out the exact relationship between the Orrs and Borlands?

Hi teemac,
My two Daltons are about 30 years older than your Thomas from the 1911 census, I wonder if he is a possibly a nephew? Can't be a son as they were serving in the East Indies when he was born. Is Dalton a particularly common surname in the region?

Armed Forces / How do I get the Service Record for 12th Regiment of Foot soldier
« on: Saturday 05 July 14 14:31 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone let me know how to get hold of the service record of Private, later Corporal George Hayman No.3309 1st Battalion, 12th Regiment of Foot? I believe he enlisted about 1853 in Westminster. Some debate among family about him, hopefully his service record might clarify some things?

Thanks Andrew

I have been researching a Catherine Dalton who emigrated to Australia in 1857. I know she was born in British India about 1839 and this has led me to 2 possible fathers John Dalton and Thomas Dalton both of whom served in the 16th Regiment of Foot (I suspect they were brothers). The 16th Foot was stationed in Ireland in the late 1810's and early 1840's which perfectly matches the time these men were in the army.

Might interest you because;

Pte. 306 John Dalton - born 1801 in Tullamore, Kilbride, King's Co. (Labourer)
29/6/1819 aged 18, attested for 16th Regiment of Foot at Athlone, Westmeath Co.
10/9/1841 discharged after 22 yrs 65 days service.

Sgt. 401 Thomas Dalton - born 1804 in Tullamore, Kilbride, King's Co. (Labourer)
7/1/1825 aged 20, attested for 31st Regiment of Foot at Tullamore, King's Co.
6/7/1846 discharged after 21 yrs 184 days service (o'seas service 15 yrs 245 days).
The 16th Foot left Ireland in 1820 for Ceylon and British India, which explains why Thomas enlisted with the 31st Foot, I do not know when he transferred to the 16th Foot.

You can view these records on the FindMyPast site.

Sandra,

Your descendant Annie Baxter (aka Bisp) (previously Hayward) (nee Orr) died in 1876 and is buried in the Geraldton, WA district as is her 2nd husband Charles William Baxter (aka Bisp) who died in 1892. The registration number for Annie's death certificate from the WA Registry of BDM is 9072/1876 if you want to purchase it. It may provide a lot of answers for you. Hope you'll share them?

Andrew  :)
