The Common Room / Re: How did Brockett became Brockie

An example in my husband's tree is the surname of Chattam.

In the late 1700's as far as the records I have found the name was Shatton. By the middle of the 1800's it had changed to Chattie and by the end of the centuary it was Chattam and remains so until this day.

This is in Scotland, West Lothian.

Excellent service.

SP are good with their rescans  but this is so fast it should get an award.

Take care,

The Lighter Side / Re: Stillbirths.

I agree with Milliepede.

My great grandmother had 2 stillbirths in 1903 and 1906. A cousin has a copy of the Deeds to the Family Plot and the 2 babies are listed as buried there. We don't know whether they were boys or girls but these babies are included in the Family tree. One as a boy and the other as a girl.

My daughter had 2 early miscarriages in 2000 and 2003 and the family certainly acknowledge these lost babies.

I had followed the Helen in the 1921 Census. However pleased that you have had help in confirming that this is not the person you are researching.

Good luck,

Dorrie

I think I may have solved it if the bbeattie can confirm the 1921 Scotland Census she is looking at is for Montrose, Scotland.

Too late to go into my findings now as bedtime but will be back on in the morning.

One thing BA on the 1921 Scottish census means Both parents alive. Nothing about adoption.

Legal adoption did not start until 1930 in Scotland so if Helen was ever legally adopted it would have been after this date and that would make her 16 with her birth year of 1914.

Scotland / Re: Any football historians able to help?
« on: Sunday 10 March 24 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Monica. I am not a football historian but I have some information which may help or confuse you. :)

There was a Charlie Tully who played for Celtic born in Northern Ireland in 1924 and died in 1971.

Also a James Tully born in 1883 and died in 1949 who was an English footballer. Played for a variety of teams including Rochdale and Clapton Orient.

All the above comes from Wikipedia.

Wish I could read some of the other names on the bottom

Not very helpful am I and hope someone else comes along who has more knowledge of football.

Dorrie.

P.S. My family all support Hibernian going back generations. I wonder why your father supported Celtic??

Midlothian / Re: Edinburgh Mother and Baby homes 1970's

Hi, you are correct and Claremont Park is at Seafield. It is on Leith Links and in the Leith Ward of Edinburgh District Council. You can find it on google maps. You can walk from the home to the Eastern Hospital in around 10 minutes. Possibly longer if you were in labour.

I lived in the area for many years from 1968. Neighbours and friends from the district had their babies at the Eastern General Hospital on Seafield Road.

A little information I have found for you on 17 Claremont Park - It was a Magdalen home for mothers and babies. It admitted unmarried mothers (first baby only) under the age of 25. Must be willing to remain for three or four months after confinement. Weekly charge 10/- or by arrangement. It's capacity was 12 mothers and 9 babies.

I feel so sorry for these poor girls.

Hopefully when you open your files in April you will be able to gain more information. Please keep us updated on what they tell you about your place of birth.

Take care,

Dorrie

Hi Maggie. Not a good start to life for any baby and mother.

One thing though Leith Hospital to my knowledge didn't have a maternity unit??? From Claremont Park it would have been the Eastern General Hospital - now closed too.
