The Common Room / Re: Is it worth paying the unlock fee on the FTDNA Site?

Mowsehowse,

Have you uploaded this person’s DNA to the My Heritage Site? They have a chromosome browser and lots of other DNA tools; which I’ve found useful.

You could also have a go at doing a WATO Chart, see:

Good luck! Romilly.

Shelagh Teresa,

Something that might be worth trying is to upload to the Living DNA Site. I’ve tested with them, in addition to Ancestry and 23andme. Like you, I’ve also uploaded to My Heritage, FTDNA and Gedmatch.

The reason that I am suggesting Living DNA is because they give the most detailed breakdown of British Isles ethnicities, and this might help you to pin down exact areas of Ireland to concentrate on.

If you could persuade your 1st cousin on your Birth Father’s side to also upload to that Site, it should assist you with sorting matches.

Another thought is, - have you tried doing a ‘Quick and Dirty Tree’ on Ancestry using your DNA matches? I’m a novice to this, but am in the process of doing one to try to identify my ever elusive Paternal Grandfather. Try googling this, and it will explain it better than I can!

Best wishes Romilly.

Hi Shelagh Teresa,

There are lots of Facebook Groups that help people to research their birth parents, I don’t know if you’ve tried this?

There’s also Search Angels, who will assist you if you ask. I would enter Search Angels into the search facility on Facebook and see what comes up.

Best of luck with your search,
Romilly.

Thanks for the replies.

Romilly - I've had a trickle of new DNA matches over the last few months but none in the last few days.

I’ve had none at all this week. Very unusual. Perhaps they’re saving them up for some (unknown) reason?

Romilly  ;D

Yes, I keep having problems with Ancestry recently ☹️
Usually of the ‘this page no longer exists’ variety…

Also, I haven’t had any new DNA matches for ages now, - very unusual!

Glamorganshire / Letters of Thanks?
« on: Thursday 14 March 24 11:53 GMT (UK)  »

Were letters of thanks sent from Government Ministers to the parents of men in the Services during WW1?

I found this snippet concerning my Grandparent’s Silver Wedding in The Cambrian Daily Leader (Welsh Newspaper) for the 22nd June 1918.

I’m unsure why my Grandfather would have received these letters of thanks?

Hi hanes teulu,
I too spotted that man and visited Kew to search for his Attestation Papers. He remained in the Royal Marines after 1893 and so wasn’t my Grandfather, who was in Swansea running several businesses and married to my Grandmother.
Interestingly, my Grandfather’s first Painting and Decorating business was run from the Arches in the Northern Docks, Swansea. I think that this lends weight to my theory that he might have spent time in the Merchant Navy.

Yes, hanes teulu, - quite a few Articles about him in Swansea in the Welsh Newspapers Online Site😉

I’ve also got a copy of the patent that he took out for his invention, ‘The Wilson Air Purifier’ in 1897.

He’s listed as a Newsagent at 113 St Helen’s Road in the Kelly’s Directory for South Wales in 1893. Later he ran a Painting and Decorating business, ‘Wilson and Co’ from 1895 - 1930 and a Newsagents and Bookshop from 99 St Helen’s Road. At one stage he also had a Drapery Business in the Mumbles!

Romilly 🙂

A Marriage Certificate only requires a current occupation.
