The Lighter Side / Re: Myths debunked when doing family histroy.
« on: Monday 26 February 24 00:14 GMT (UK)  »
My sister-in-law is convinced that we are an unusual family, having a variety of members who misbehaved; experienced everything from poverty to bankruptcy and so on whilst her family is squeaky clean.
I am trying very hard to dispel her perception of her family!

England / Re: Ellen M Rudge's disappearing act

Wow thank you for that information. I didn't check the Scottish records. I wonder how she met William McCulloch. There wasn't any oral family history suggesting that.
Thanks again Jackie

England / Ellen M Rudge's disappearing act
« on: Friday 23 February 24 22:36 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone may be able to help find out about Ellen M Rudge.
She was born 1899, Wednesfield, Staffs and married George V Hazelwood in 1917 Tynemouth.
I have found her in the 1901, 1911, 1921 Census and in the 1939 Register.
In the latter, there is a change of surname to McCulloch with the date 24/1/1957 and note Half med? It is faint but legible (RG101/1070H/006/16).
I have looked through the marriages between Hazelwood or Rudge to McCulloch for the period 1941-1958 and drawn a blank. I have searched for a death with Hazelwood or McCulloch but none seemed to fit. Has anyone any suggestions?

The Lighter Side / Re: More Strange Occupations !!!!

Thank you for the link to the previous thread. I just thought it was one of those quirky job titles. Also, it wasn't the William Murray I was looking for.

Well, looking for a William Murray in 1881 Census, came across this one -
William Murray b1847, living in Tunbridge, occupation transcribed as Inspector of Nuisances. RG11/916/5/4
Seems to tally with the original. Now I am intrigued as to what qualified something as a nuisance?
I can think of several relevant to today but back in 1881?

World War One / Re: Percy died and the family were untraceable?
« on: Friday 26 January 24 23:28 GMT (UK)  »
Is Percy the son of Arthur Edward Gibbs and Catherine Caffery, who were married in 1893 Croydon?
1901 Census has the family living in Norwood area.
At a quick glance, I didn't see them in 1911.

Just checking the 1901 census for Francis G Fricker (RG13/166/52/38) transcription gives his occupation as Manager Paper Boy factory.
I wonder if there was a mould for paper boys. ::)
Checking the original, it is a paper bag factory.
