The Common Room / Marble Cutter Journeyman
« on: Friday 03 August 18 07:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
My GG Grandfather is listed on his wedding certificate as a Marble Cutter Journeyman. Now from reading about Journeyman it appears this has nothing to do with travel but my question is that he was from Lancashire England and travelled to Glasgow Scotland which is where he got married. Does anyone have some clues as to why he would go to Glasgow? Was there a particular good marble cutting trade in Glasgow ? Any help would be appreciated thankyou

Lancashire / Re: Dilworth Lancashire 1790's

Ciderdrinker, can you please tell me where you can see that the parents of William and James are William and Mary. I am looking at the parish registers for St Wilfred and I see it only states William not Mary. It will be a big help to get confirmation that Mary was his wife as I haven't found a marriage record for them yet either. I have a William and Grace at St Wilfred in 1781 but no William and Mary
Hope to hear back from you
Thanks

Lancashire / Dilworth Lancashire 1790's
« on: Friday 16 June 17 10:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am at a crossroads with an ancestor with two possible matches. Ancestor Richard Clayton shows on the 1851 Census as being born in Dilworth, Lancs. One match for baptism shows Longridge and one for Ribchester. Google has given me this info .....DILWORTH, a township in Ribchester parish, Lancashire; on the Preston and Longridge railway, 7 miles NE of Preston. It contains Longridge village....... In 1791 does anyone know whether a person born in Dilworth would be baptised in Ribchester or Longridge please?

Armed Forces / The 5th Lancers
« on: Tuesday 02 May 17 14:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can tell me about the 5th Lancers please. The reason I am asking is I have two GGG Grandfathers that served in the 5th Lancers and both at separate times appear to have deserted, One in 1876 and one in 1878. Was this something common at the time or does it appear to be just my relatives ? Is there something in particular about the 5th lancers ?
Any help would be appreciated thank you

Orkney / Orkney Scotland
« on: Monday 01 May 17 04:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am researching an ancestor named James Johnston who according to cursitor married Euphan Anderson stating he was born approx. 1737 in Holm Orkney. When I look for his birth I have a couple of options around that time though with nothing stating Holm which would of been much easier :) however there is a birth in 1740 for a James Johnston from Westray And Papa Westray, I know Holm and Paplay is the full name for Holm which to me sounds like it could be close to Westray and Papa Westray. Any ideas appreciated, thank you

Hi and thank you for the replies
They did have another child Marjory Flett who is showing with Adam Flett. I think you are right Jomot that it may just be a simple error.
