I transcribed for FreeBMD for about 5 or 6 years in the early stages. I found it great therapy.

They also have big gaps!! Usually where my ancestors should be!

I use FreeBMD, FindMyPast, and whatever else is online but haven't got bucket loads of cash to splash out on subscriptions so pay for a month and got nuts in that month!

Thank you very much for all the input. It is extremely frustrating trying to find anyone when I can't wander off to the local office of BMD to do a look up or hunt down churches etc on the weekends.Robert James had another son (stepbrother to my Da) with Elizabth -  Harry WATSON 1919 Sept 1/4 Rotherham 9c 1271. I might send off for this but I doubt it will give me any more info than I already have.

@ ShaunJ - how silly of me on two accounts - not remembering that I had posted in 2012 (I should have just copied and reposted lol) AND putting dealer instead of dresser. These really are of no consequence as I am looking for people rather than occupations! If the Weymouth death is correct then his certificates are out by 2 years as I put him being born 1878 (not 1876) going by both ages given on the certs. Thank you for your input.

@Jen - Thank you but I am looking for a Robert James, not John R.

@Annette Thank you! I never knew there was an alternative. Do you think he was a rabbit catcher and onsold the skins to a milliner or similar? Not that it really matters as I can't find the old codger anyway!

@Silvery Witnesses are Hubert W Harrison and Mary Ann Foster (Martha's Mother). On the second marriage cert they are Amy Sykes and John Habbershon. No help at all really!

@KGarrad Thank you! I am at a total loss really as I don't know if the ages he gave on his marriage certs were the real McCoy. He was consistent with them though. I have 2 options for a death cert so may have to go with those.

Shaun - I should have gone off his marriage certs as they put his DOB about 1878.

I suspect, like my own Da, he may not have been too concerned about his age being truthful if his son followed in his footsteps! My Da was really 15 years older than he said when he died! Perhaps like father like son?

It is more his father's names that I cannot get a handle on. I think if I can crack those then I may be able to find his mother etc.

The only one close on census (1881/91) is for Robert though listed as born in Isleham and not Ely,  but not with either of the fathers names which appear on the birth cert. Perhaps he made the names up for whatever reason? I can't see him going from a gardener's labourer at 15 to an engineer owning his own steam engines!

I have been trying on and off for 20 years to solve this by myself from Australia with not luck so I am opening the gates to the more knowledgeable and experienced!

My Father Robert John WATSON 20/3/1909 b to Martha Elizabeth Olive (FOSTER) and Robert James WATSON in Rotherham. Have birth cert for Da and marriage cert for Martha & Robert. Married 1 May 1907 24 years and 29 years respectively. Occupation for Robert James was a steam crane driver.

Martha dies of pernicious anaemia in 1913 Sheffield Womens Hospital. Got death cert. Robert James was listed as Colliery Engineman.

Robert James WATSON remarried to Elizabeth TAGGERT/TAGGART 7 March 1916. Occupation Mechanic at munitions works. Resided at 142 ST Annes Road, Rotherham at time of marriage.

Robert James' father on first cert is Samuel Thomas WATSON skin dealer.
On the second marriage cert his father is listed as JOHN Watson but still a skin dealer! (Maybe to GRO made an error when they transcribed it).

On the 1911 Census, I gather Robert James was born in Ely, Cambridgeshire about 1864. He is in Rotherham with Da and Martha.
There are no John or Samuel WATSONs to be found by me with a son between 5 and 10 (given he could well have fibbed about his age)  on the 1871 census.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as my Grandie is really doing my head in!!

For what it is worth, I know he was still kicking along in Weymouth in 1959 as I have a photo dated then stating it is 'Me hard at work in ? yard on Chitterall Road'. He also owned steam raod engines that hauled heavy loads. I have numerous photos of him in them and contacted the FODEN engine fanciers/collectors but never  heard another thing back after numerous follow ups 15 years ago.

Many thanks in advance.

Sonja

I cannot find hide nor hair of any Samuel Thomas WATSON that fits and I have no clue as to what Robert James' mother's name was nor if he had any siblings.
Two possibles as a youngster both for 1851 One in Newcastle-upon-Tyne if Samuels year of birth was 1841 or 1838 in Garsington Oxfordshire as the son of a Farmer.

I am beginning to think that this family were official census evaders!

Hmmm - maybe I have the wrong JEPSON family!  :o  It could be the Spitfire Hill mob I need.

Edward FOSTER m Mary Ann JEPSON (b Beltoft) 3 Apr 1881 (I have the marriage cert). Her father was listed as James JEPSON.

I will have a look at Thomas and Susan now.

Again, many thanks.

Thank you both sooo much! Obviously both my research skills and my research sources are very badly lacking! ::)

This will make some pieces fall into place I hope.

Warm regards

Nottinghamshire / JEPSON family - Misterton/Budby
« on: Friday 29 May 15 10:34 BST (UK)  »
I have finally got around to having another crack at this branch!

Tobias JEPSON (b 02 Sep 1782 Budby) m Elizabeth HOUSETON 25/11/1805 All Souls/Saints Anglican Church, Misterton.
I gather she died as he married again  13/10/1807 to Susannah/Susanna WELLS in the same church. Then again Elizabeth may have given him the flick if he was kicking up his heels with Susannah who gives birth bang on the knocker of 9 months post marriage!

John baptised 10 Jul 1808 but was buried at All Saints 13 Jul 1808.

Here is my concern - I can find no other offspring until Henry in 1826 then James 1828 who marries Ann DRAKES 18 May 1854 Amcott, Lincs.

Seems a bit odd that there was an 18 year (approx) gap!

Would anyone be able to offer some insight into this for me please?

Many Thanks in advance.
