Re Minniehaha post #42

If I have the reference to the wedding you identified it has now been pointed out that William Andrew Hill was not born in 1893 - I am not sure where that date came from.

Australia / Samuel Stevens of Ballarat 1888 - 1900 roughly
« on: Saturday 09 May 20 06:02 BST (UK)  »
An Irish girl Sarah James arrived in Melbourne 19 Oct 1865. She married a widower Phillip Mitchell 22 Nov 1866 at United Presbyterian Manse, Ballarat. Three children Alfred 1867, Susan 1876 and Alice 1885.
Phillip committed suicide by throwing himself down a mine shaft 20 Sept 1886.
Sarah remarried Samuel Stevens, a captain, at the same Manse on 28 August 1888.
Nothing further heard about Samuel Stevens.
1902 Sarah is registered at the Ballarat Benevolent Home - dies there 31 May 1906.

There are many Samuel Stevens hanging around Ballaratt at the time - I suspect he made off with widow Sarah's money. Is there any way of finding him?

The girl behind is not I assume one of the children but a carer, not necessarily a mother. The only children I can find are the ones listed. It would be easy if the old man had not died in 1897.

Warwickshire / James Wilson and Prudence Downs' grandchildren

Born 1818 between 1880 -1897 resident 73 Cardigan St, Duddleston. Ex Crimea War and Drill Inspector B'ham Police.
Children Mary Jane 1848, Sarah Ann 1850, Jessy Wilson 1855-65, Clara 1858-1890 [children James & Annie), Emmanette 1868 - 1944 (dies in South Africa - four daughters born between 1890 and 1900, all died in South Africa.

Picture of James Wilson with six grandchildren circa 1895 - so cant be Emmanatte's daughters.

Unable to find reliable record of spouse of Sarah Ann Wilson - so don't know if she married and had six children - is the photo of grandchildren from two families?

My I summarize what I know and don't know.
The following Oakleys arrived in Wellington as follows:
Henry William arrived on LaHogue 26th May 1874 age 19 married Annie Ruhabina Mullerd 29 March 1877 - ?no children
Ellen arrived Victory May 1884 age 24 with David (one of an identical twin) 15 and Phillip 11.
Harriet Elizabeth arrived on Aorangi 14 Nov 1889 age 23.

Ellen married Alfred Elias Barrow Hitchmough 1886 8th June. Alfred died suddenly June 1898 many newspaper articles. Ellen sells house and goods 89 Austin St newspaper report 23 Feb 1899 as leaving Wellington - no children according to newspapers. NO FURTHER TRACE - although other lady of same name appears in press.

David leaves Wellington Feb 18, 1899; Harriet leaves 21 March 1900 - both end up in Kanowna, WA.

Phillip marries Alice Mary Dormer in January 1902 - 6 children - all still in NZ.

OPEN Query - where did Mrs Ellen Hitchmough get to - assuming she is NOT the drunk widely reported in Wellington at that time.

Australia / Kanowna near Kalgoorlie, WA
« on: Wednesday 26 February 20 10:01 GMT (UK)  »
David Oakley, 28, left Wellington NZ for Kanowna in Feb 1897. He became a miner. Married a local girl Elizabeth Davies in 1900.
The name D Oakley appears in the Kalgoorlie press, from Kanowna, before and after 1897.
Who was the other Oakley? The voters list was only compiled from1903 onwards and records David, wife Elizabeth and sister Harriet. No other Oakley.
Does anyone have any knowledge of another Oakley connected with Kanowna? It only had a max of 12000 inhabitants.
