The Common Room / Re: GRO Missing Years Death

You could consider contacting the Swansea Register Office.  Their email address is:-

registrars@swansea.gov.uk

You could ask them what the charge is to search the death register.  As you have his year of death it shouldn't take long to find if it was registered.

When in1972 did he die?  If it was late December it may have been registered in the following year, January 1973.

Have you thought to check the local papers for that time to see if there is any mention of his death there?

The Lighter Side / Re: Mass Observation Day 2024

I'm afraid my day would be incredibly boring.  ;D  I live a very humdrum life doing nothing of any great moment.

It mainly consists of having meals, doing whatever housework needs to be done and doing my jigsaw puzzles.

Are these Mass Observation people really interested in that?

Welcome to RootsChat  :D

Can you tell us what sort of information you wish to find?  Are you going backwards from his father or forwards with his children.

You have given no birth place for James.  Have you found census records for him?

Welcome to RootsChat  :D

There is an 1851 census record for a John Hern and wife Frances living at Haytown Village, Bulkworthy, Bideford, Devon.  His birth year is given as 1771.

John's occupation is given as Cooper and birthplace as Langtree, Devon.  His wife's birthplace is given as Bulkworthy, Devon.

They are also in the 1841 census living in Haytown with what I assume is their married daughter Ann.

I would keep options open and see if you can find other John Hern records.  It's always worth finding as many possibilities that are available.  If you build up a record of all likely John Herns you may be able to get a clearer picture.

Also bear in mind spelling variations of the surname - Herne, Hearn, Hearne etc.  Tick the Name Variants box when searching.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: 1939 Register, London evacuees difficult

I'm trying to discover up to what year Find My Past have got to with revealing names of people who have died regardless of their birth year.

My father was born in August 1924, died in 1993, and I can see his name on the 1939 Register.  I'm pretty sure that it was visible before the 100 birth year rule.

Interesting possibilities there Monica.  I see that this couple are in the 1939 Register living in Battersea.  She was born in 1907.

Whether this is Doris's married sister or not, who knows.  Possible births for Ellen don't put her anywhere near Wales.  The 'closest' is Gloucester.

Have you thought about looking for the sister Crawford in Battersea in 1953?  If you can find the sister on an electoral roll for Battersea then that should give her first name.

You then, hopefully, have a means to find out more.

All that can be seen in that column is a series of initials.  Probably those of the persons checking the information.

If you can find another form like that which is clear then you will know for sure.  I don't think it is of any great importance in relation to the rest of the form.
