Ah yes, that will be where I came up with the year 1955, I had forgotten where I saw that! Thank you for pointing that out and jogging my memory.

Hi
I have his birth, marriage and other info including the death of his father Alfred Thomas Dering Nettleton in Cape Town but John's death is the info I am looking for. Thanks to everyone for their help. I'm sure his death entry will  pop up sooner or later. It would probably have made the newspapers in SA due to his VC son!

Thanks Sue that is really helpful. I have  distant family I recently tracked down in Cape Town so I will ask them to obtain the details fron within South Africa if possible.
Did you come across the death details for John Hennah Nettleton by any chance? I think 1955 is s possible year of death.

Wow! I am amazed at the number of responses I have had today! Thank you so much for all your input. I will follow up on everything you have suggested when I get on the desktop pc as the phone is a poor substitute for proper research! Please keep your suggestions coming,  they are really appreciated.
Kind regards Elaine

Ooh, 30 miles is not too far. I'll definitely check that out.
Thanks again

Hi Hannah
Thanks for your reply. I'm in Surrey so not really able to do much research in Scotland although I visited Aberdeen and Huntly several years ago and got some photocopies of the Drumblade register entries for John and his family.
If you can give me any guidance on how to look at the records you mention I would be most grateful. I even thought John might be the son of Sir John Cumming but having got a list of his children there was no match. I'm still hoping to find his recommendation for a ensign position in 1805 at the National Archives which might have family mentioned but so far it has eluded me! I appreciate your help very much.

Thanks for your reply. No idea of siblings or parents just the Aberdeen and specifically Drumblade connection. Yes I know about Mary Ann's death and the Impey connection thank you. Glasgow shoemaker looks unlikely, you can see how I have hit the brick wall!
Thanks again

Hi again
That looks really interesting! Where is Keith in relation to Drumblade? My Scottish geography is rubbish, I'll Google it when I get back on the pc!
Thanks for your help. I still don't know how I can prove if that is his family or not! A family of Cummings in Huntly looks hopeful too but again how can I be sure? I prefer definites rather than assumptions hence my brick wall!

Thanks for your reply. I am aware of Andrew Leith Hay but assume my man's son was just named after him as I can't link him to the Cumming family directly! I will give it another go however. I am grateful for your time and thoughts.
