Thanks Andy.   I found more info on Wikipedia.  I've emailed RR to ask if he knows William Cathcart's birthplace.  If it was Ireland he may be connected to me.  I've asked him for dates of enlistments with the Army and date and place of death ... awaiting his reply.  I did a DNA test with Ancestry a month ago  .. then I will know if we are connected.
Rootschatters previously located much info for me on my maternal Great Grandfather, the Rogue, James Cathcart.
He was born at Fulwood, Preston in 1852 or 1854 but not baptised until 1855 when his mother Jane Dickinson had married widower John Cathcart (of Ireland) moved to Kendal, then Alloa then enlisted in the RA as a bombardier and was stationed at Cliffden Camp, near Freshwater, IoWight.
there he married in 1874.  He Re-enlisted with the Scots Guards at London but was discovered to be a Deserter and returned to the RA.
He and his family appear at Southerness in the 1881 Census using the Wilson surname.  On the same Census page are other Army Wilsons, some from Ireland.
James Cathcart (Wilson) then disappears.  His wife dies aged 27 in Freshwater in 1885 after being in the Workhouse and her children go into Workhouses again.
His youngest son, Albert William (Edward) Cathcart, b.1884 enlists and eventually becomes RSM of the Lancers based at Weedon Bec.  He marries Gladys Emma Tubby in 1925.  She told me he never knew his parents but had been told his father was from Glasgow. Alloa is not too far away and he was there in 1871.
I suspect he snuck into Canada or the USA.
cheers,  Ian

born 1765, William Cathcart, Katchcart / Kithcart and other variations...married Rebecca Key. in 1802 at St.Mary the Virgin, Bocking, Braintree, Essex.
I was contacted by RR saying he had a DNA test result from Ancestry showing connections to the Essex Cathcarts through his maternal side.  William's son Joseph born at Bocking 1802 was the only one I knew about.  Is there any way of finding out more about William and any connection to Ireland?
thanks, Ian

Sumatra and Calibre can be downloaded free to your computer and can read ebooks and pdf files. No need for a Kindle.   In the CEX store in Irvine's shopping mall they sell refurbished stuff and they had an early version of Kindle for £20.
My local Library checks their files and locates stock from other libraries and requests them then emails me when they receive them.  Great for hard to get authors like Magnus Mills, etc!
hope this helps, cheers, Ian

Montgomeryshire / Re: Montgomery Births and possible patronymic names use

Darryl Lundy's site will show many of the Aristocratic Montgomeries.

Originating in France, Mont Gommery, they arrived in small boats across the channel ....
After being given land in England and Wales they arrived in Scotland ... mostly North Ayrshire.
The Earls of Montgomery created the village of Eaglesham and the port town of Ardrossan and canals from there to Glasgow, before the railways, and their principal seat was Eglinton Castle, between Irvine & Kilwinning.  They intermarried with the Wintons and Setons, see thepeerage.com for details.

Just a thought on CPU, the main processor at the heart of your machine.  I'm currently mostly using an old Lenovo G50 laptop of 10 years  age but it was originally top of its range, but...
the CPU is an Intel N2830
and on searching Lenovo's site and others I discovered it was a budget chip designed to run slowly on laptops etc!, especially those with no cooling fans and therefore was set not to overheat.
So, don't try to 'Overclock' it.
But your CPU might be a contender for ' Overclocking ' as Gamers frequently do.
Just Google 'Overclocking CPUs'.  Normally it's done by changing values in the BIOS/UEFI.

Download ' everything' from Voidtools ... Free.   Choose not to have it Run as Administrator and no need for it in startup.
Use Windows button simultaneously with 'R' pressed and in the resultant box enter ' Services msc' and scroll down the list for SEARCH ( the Windows version ) and disable it ( in Properties) but ALSO Disable INDEXING because that is what uses too much CPU time.  Search can function without the Indexing, it justs takes longer, but Everything is rapid compared to Windows Search.
Hunting the 'net I found that you can set the CPU to Minimum 50% and Maximum 100% and though it seems counter-intuitive, it works, my CPU percentage went up in Task Manager and Performance Monitor.
Hope this helps.
cheers, Ian

I've already got a default browser but Edge still lingers and starts whenever it feels like it!
Cr

Same thing here!
Whenever my PC is slowing down it's almost always Edge causing the problem.
I just start Task Manager and "End Task".

Windows UPDATES seems to switch processes back ON even though yuo've successfully Disabled them in 'Services MSC'.
Apart from the dreaded and much hated 'antimalware part of Windows Defender' always running and using CPU and hogging Memory another Culprit which slows your computer down is the notoriously inefficient SEARCH function, or more especially its INDEXING process.
For years I have used Everything from Voidtools to search my computer files, fast & reliable.
After my last Windows Update the computer slowed to a crawl with 23% of my CPU and 50% of my RAM memory in constant use even with no apps running I detected the main culprit to be the now switched ON again Search INDEXING which was not only indexing file names but Content as well.
So I Disabled Windows Search & INDEXING and re-installed Everything from Voidtools and now I am whizzing along again.
I suspect if you disable Edge it will be activated again by Microsoft at your next update.
It doesn't matter much if Windows background processes are ON and RUNNING as long as they are using minimal CPU time and very little RAM.
My other computer is using LINUX, Peppermint 10 distro, and goes at speed even though it is on a 12 year old computer.
cheers, Ian

Technical Help / Re: Word
« on: Thursday 01 February 24 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
Within the depths of Windows 10 you will find, Notepad, very very basic, and also you should find Wordpad, a simplified version of Word, but still a word processor, adequate for your letter-writing needs.  I checked the Microsoft website and it appears you can re-install Word or download it from their site.
I've used LibreOffice suite for years  (free) and it's word processor is called Writer ... equivalent to Ms Word.
However, I frequently Download Song Lyrics and it has recently become the way to offer them as PDF (portable document format ) files and if locked then you can't EDIT them easily, except... by using Editpad Lite (free) which gives you the power to do what you like with almost any Text file.
If you are only doing letters as correspondence then I recommend Wordpad.
cheers, Ian
