Travelling People / Re: Trapnell Family before 1850

Arthur Henry TRAPNELL birth registered Sept qtr 1859 at Bishops Storford has mmn BARRY, but I find it hard to believe he is John and Louisa's son - though it seems to say that on the 1861 census.  :-\

I can't seem to find the birth registration of the Fanny TRAPNELL (aged 6 on the 1861 census).  :-\

I think the 1790 which seems to be commonly listed as the year she was born must be wrong. The 1851 census lists her as 35 years younger than the 1861! And the article you found seems to be the missing piece, as that lists her age as 55 in 1869, making her DOB closer to 1817 (as per the 1851 census) than 1790 (as per the 1861 census). That means her children were born when she was approx 20-40, which makes more sense.

Can't help yet with pre 1850, however there is a detailed report in the newspapers of Louisa and daughter Selina (and others) in trouble with the law in 1869. Happy to send you a copy if you haven't seen it.
Tuesday,  Aug. 10, 1869
Publication: Bury and Norwich Post

Also, John in trouble in 1859
Saturday,  July 16, 1859
Publication: Hertford Mercury and Reformer

I have managed to track the first article down, so thank you very much. If you have a copy of the second that would be much appreciated.

EDIT: Don't worry, I have found the second one now. Thank you so much for the tip. My son loves Punch and Judy so amusing to know his 5xgreat-grandfather was once performing it.

Thank you all so much. I am so sorry for the delay. Life happened and I completely forgot I had posted this. My husband has taken my kids out for the afternoon and I happened to come back across it.

I am going to look into all these leads now, but I am so grateful.

Travelling People / Trapnell Family before 1850

Hi

This is a long shot, but I am looking for any evidence or documents people might have come across linked to the Trapnell family, who appear to have been travelling equestrians and acrobats. I am particularly interested in anything from before 1850.

My great-great-great-great Grandfather was John Trapnell who appears to have been born around 1797. There are quite a few sources starting with the 1851 census that show him as an equestrian, and his children all seem to have been travelling performers too (including my great-great-great grandmother Miriam).

Censuses and baptism records show his wife as Louisa. Trees on Ancestry often claim her to be Louisa Barry or Louisa Westicote Barry, but I can't find any marriage records to confirm her last name. One of their sons did use the name John George Westicote Trapnell (according to a descendent I spoke to).

A number of trees also list his parents as Thomas Trapnell and Sarah Viner, but again I can't find any sources which link him to them (like a baptism record or a marriage record).

I am wondering if anyone knows of any resources that might have records. I can't seem to find them listed on any of the travelling people sites :(

Hi

I have had this problem for a few years, and always end up giving up and forgetting about it.

Basically I have a lot of traveller ancestors and would like to add them to the Database for Special Interests Groups (DBSIG), but every time I try I get this error message:

One function of this database is to help RootsChat members to find (possible) common ancestors.
To contact other members, or for other members to be able to contact you,
you must be able to use the RootsChat Private Message (PM) system

Therefore you must be able to use the Private Message (PM) system before you can use this function.

The PM system will be available to you as soon as you have made 2 postings in the RootsChat forum.

The problem is that I am already able to PM, and have made more than 2 posts (though I appreciate that I am not a frequent poster). I have tried on lots of computers so I don't think its a cookies problem. Can anyone check if my account is flagged in some way?

Thank you

My great-great grandmother was their daughter Selina Ann Compton Cook (married name Pett). My great-grandmother Selina Pett (married names Palmer and Finch) used to talk about Compton Wynates apparently.

There is also another family story that an ancestor crossed the Thames of a tightrope whilst pregnant. It might have been on the Palmer side rather than the Pett side (though I am not sure if the Palmers were travellers or not), but it is interesting given:

a) The Trapnells had clear links to circus performers
b) There were two female tightrope walkers nicknamed 'The Female Blondin', both of whom were named Selina. Very likely could be a coincidence/common traveller name, and I have found no link between either of The Female Blondins and the Trapnells/Cookes, but thought you might be interested.

Hi Caroline

Really nice to meet you!

My family actually have the same story: that we are illegitimate heirs to the Compton Wynates estate. Maybe there is something to it.

My Aunty yesterday said she thought his mother's surname was Compton, but I haven't found any records that verify this.

I had also come across the same stuff as you about the Trapnells. I had wondered if the Cookes and the Trapnells travelled together, it doesn't look like it.

It seems to be a bit of a dead end, but every now and again I waste some more time on it!

I'm still having the same problem. I'll try again on another laptop and see if it works  :-\
