Many thanks for everyone's help - I will go off for a little while and investigate and try and put all the pieces together - I had also been having trouble working out why the two boys seemed to be away from their parents in the 1871 census. I had seen that Betsey had died, so couldn't follow that up!

I tend to try and find out as much about the children as I can, and then if I can't find the parents I try and trace the children as sometimes it can turn out someone is staying with a relative etc, but I've hit a block with Walter J and Eliza, so thanks again for your help!

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Withers family in Hambledon
« on: Wednesday 24 January 18 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I wonder if someone might be able to help me - I am on the trail of Walter John Withers (m. Eliza Gillo Jun 1852 Droxford). From Cristening records I can see they had the following children, all christened in Hambledon:

Walter (1852)
James (1854)
Betsey (1856)
Alice (1857)
Edward Gillo (1859)
Eliza (1865)
Annie Lydia (1874)

I have been trying to find them in the 1861 census but to no avail - can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Many thanks in advance!

Laura

Hi, I wonder if anyone might be able to help me - the head of the family in the census return I am looking at has father's birthplace as what looks like UK, but I am very certain his father was actually born in France, on the Cote d'Armor. Am I reading the census return incorrectly, or does it indeed say UK? (The family in the return are in Jersey, C.I.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Laura

Dorset / Re: James Maidment (1778-1862)

Thank you Pennines and Ciderdrinker - you've both been very helpful, and I will definitely look into the possibility of Hannah James being a widow; it would explain why I'm having such difficulty finding her birth! Even so, you've given me food for thought and more avenues to explore, so thank you!

Dorset / James Maidment (1778-1862)
« on: Tuesday 28 June 16 17:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, I have found a record of my husband's 4xgreat grandfather James Maidment marrying Hannah James on 30 May 1803 in Tarrant Rawston. However, I'm having trouble tracing back from Hannah, as I can't find a baptism for a Hannah James anywhere local. (The only one I found within the right sort of time-frame was in Bridport, which I thought might be too far away.) According to the 1841 census she was born in Dorset, but I've searched the Dorset records and found nothing.

Does anyone have any advice for me please?!

Technical Help / Re: Printing to a PDF file

That's interesting. Is there anything in Firefox's print settings that could be causing your problem?

And I would say the photo is too early for the baby to have been born in 1938.
