London and Middlesex / Re: London land tax records after death?
« on: Thursday 09 September 21 10:19 BST (UK)  »
Ah no, the use of sporadically is my mistake - I only found some years but that was because of a mistranscription. I've since found that he seems to be listed consistently until at least 1910 (the Southwark records after that aren't on Ancestry it seems.)

I did wonder about the estate being in the hands of administrators - but it would appear he's renting the property from "Magdalen College" (he's listed as the occupier, Magdalen College as the owner) so I wouldn't have thought that was the case.

My only other theory is that it appears the land tax seems to be listed as exempt when someone is renting the property - I wonder if no-one else was there and Magdalen College listed it that way to dodge the tax?

London and Middlesex / London land tax records after death?
« on: Wednesday 08 September 21 22:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on a bit of an odd set of records for one of my ancestors! This relates to my 3rd great grandfather, Joseph Charles Lorberg 1838-1899. Of importance here is the uniqueness of that name - there's no record of any other Joseph Charles Lorberg that I can find in or around London anywhere near that timeframe.

When looking at the land tax records relating to him, I see a whole bunch from 1896 onwards, on 24 Shand Street. That all matches up great - but the issue is these records carry on sporadically after he died. In particular, there's one as late as 1907 - same name, same address, 8 years after he died: https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=2170&h=15612937&ssrc=pt&tid=88635117&pid=48572073054&usePUB=true

So from what I can work out, he definitely died in 1899, there was definitely no-one else around with the same name, and there's definitely land tax records relating to him after his death. Could there be any sensible explanation for this?

Wiltshire / Re: John / Robert Berry in Little Hinton

Thank you very much for finding those - that makes a lot more sense than if they were the same person, especially with the extra records that you found in the mix!

That has invoked another bit of a mystery though, in that I've found two John Berry's that could have reasonably been married to Elizabeth; the first was the son of John & Ann and the second the son of William & Sarah. Both were born in 1677, but I haven't found a way of differentiating the two! The only difference I was wondering about is the addition of "miller" in the records, but I believe all the Berry's were millers at that point (there was a Berry mill in Little Hinton which they had a copyhold on from Hinton manor throughout this time.) Is there anything I'm missing here?

Wiltshire / John / Robert Berry in Little Hinton

Hello,

Having traced back part of my family tree to the Berry's that were in Little Hinton until around the 1800's, I became a bit stuck getting reliably beyond Virgil Berry - since the parish was rather small, I decided to just do a search for parish records in Little Hinton that mention "Berry" (there's only a couple of hundred), then see if I can fit them all together in a way that makes sense.

I've managed to do this reasonably successfully to a point, but have now hit a point where it looks like someone's name may be changing between John & Robert, and I'm wondering if this is at all possible?

The relevant records I've found are:

- Marriage between Robert Berry & Elizabeth, 16 Nov 1718
- Robby Berry baptised 9 Jun 1724, parents noted as Robert & Elizabeth
- Bridget Berry baptised 16 Feb 1728, parents noted as Robert & Elizabeth
- George Berry baptised 31 Jan 1730, parents noted as Robert & Elizabeth
- Francis Berry baptised 18 Feb 1730, parents noted as *John* & Elizabeth
- George Berry *buried* 20 Apr 1730, parents noted as John & Elizabeth

The discrepancy in George's parents is what I find most odd, as the fact George's parents are listed in his burial record at all makes me think it's the same George (at least the pattern I've seen would suggest parents are only generally listed if it's a child who dies.) I can't find any other relevant George's in Little Hinton either, nor a marriage between a separate John / Elizabeth.

However, the other thing that would point to them being separate Elizabeths is that Francis was baptised only a couple of months after George!

I feel like I'm probably missing something relatively big here - is anyone able to decipher any more or offer any clues?

Hello,

Just in case anyone else is searching for the same information, I did find the baptist record for Virgil dated 17 May 1734 - it has been transcribed as Virgil "Bray" rather than Berry (this has also given me the parents names as John & Elizabeth.)

Thanks - I think I need to get out of the habit of just searching the Ancestry records!

That's very helpful, thank you so much! I don't suppose I could ask what records you found the burial information in?

Sorry, should have said! I'm confident as I can be that the Virgil Berry I keep finding on other public trees is the same one, as he has the same two wives (Mary Clargo and Martha Brind) as the marriage records that I found as well as (at least a subset of) the same children with the correct dates.

I've traced one of my ancestors back to Virgil Berry reasonably easily, (maybe b. ~1734), but only found his marriage records - he married Martha Brind in 1755 and Mary Clargo in 1761. However, I can't find any birth records for him, or anything else - there are plenty of other "Berrys" around Little Hinton in that time period, but I can't work out how they relate!

I do keep finding birth dates of around 1734 on other public trees, as well as a couple more generations back, but I feel like I'm missing something as I've no idea where the sources for this information come from.

If anyone could shed some light on him it'd be much appreciated!
