So that's $44 for the certificate and $16.10 for International Registered Post.

Alternative:
Search of a register (no certificate issued)  $39

https://nt.gov.au/law/bdm/births-deaths-and-marriages-office-fees   Yes i did see that however I was told by the person i am emailing they dont do print outs as in nz they only do birth certificates, so i am not sure what i would be paying $39 for.  I guess just a yes or no that it is there?

JM and Debra

The military record is one for Defence Engineer Service Corps NZ 1941 which is not online but was found from my enquiries and sent to me from defence dept.

It is interesting though that he states on the form he had been in the military previous for 2 1/2 yrs which could have been the australian army, though i have searched and not found him there.

Yes I had checked both nsw and south australias online records just in case.  I am in nz and it seems strange to me that they are not going to put their records online, she said they are a closed registry.

Australia / Darwin Australia birth

Does anyone have access to cds to look up Darwin Births.   I am having some difficulty communicating with the Northern Territory BDM.  There are no online records at all it seems and I am told not likely to ever be as received in an email from them.  I have been quoted $44.00 for cert and $16.10 for postage.  I am still attempting to find out what will happen if i pay and they cannot locate the birth.  Having difficulty with their email system which intermittently fires back emails as undeliverable.   I have a date that this grandfather put on his army record, however it is different to what he always told the family and we also had a rumour about him changing his name.

The information he has given on his nz army record is:

Name:   John HARDY
Born      10th Oct 1892
Darwin Australia.    Parents William HARDY and Alice HARDY  maiden name HOWARD

The year of birth he told family was 1888 and the rumour was that he changed his last name
from West  (may or may not be true)

Would like to confirm that the record exists before ordering and paying.  Thanks

Hello today1...

Quote from: today1
...he had a whole album filled with photos taken in fiji...very old

Did it look as if the Fijian photos were taken during wartime. For what it's worth, it looks like the only NZ troops in Fiji were 3rd Division, 2 NZEF.

I've asked about the uniform on a military forum. One forum member (Atilla) noted that...

Quote
[...] the collar badges are generic and typical of those worn by NZ Artillery and NZ Engineers

[...] the jacket is not a battle dress as they did not have brass buttons or collar badges. As such it is likely to be the old style Service Dress jacket which was commonly issued to home service troops during WW2.

[...] If I were to take a guess I would say [he was] Home service Artillery/Coastal defence.

In reply #57 you said...

What I will do, is take a copy of the photo and with an explanation letter send it in to the army personnel records people and see what they may be able to come up ....last i heard it was years wait

I reckon that's the best course of action until another avenue presents itself.

If you don't have it, here is the NZDF info link with postal details...

General enquiries about other medals awarded to you or a family member
http://medals.nzdf.mil.nz/info/forms.html#gen

The reason I'm giving a Medals link is that the Home Service were eligible for the NZ War Medal. There seem to be no surviving nominal rolls of the Home Guard so medal recipients seems like the best (only?) option. Hopefully John HARDY was eligible for and claimed his medal.

Print out the photo and give the "known" info (e.g John HARDY of Petone, Home Guard, died 29 Nov 1966).

The link says turnaround is four months so there's no time like the present to get doing :-)

Regards
Beg

Thank you Beg, the fiji info is really interesting and I am doing some looking around on the internet in that area, for british/aust/nz troops there during WW1, I could be mistaken however seems to me the photos were pre 1940s.  I recall when i ordered my fathers records I emailed them, so I have sent off the photos and all the available information I have with a further explanation including the fiji possibility and we will see what comes back.  Will post on here what or whether anything has come of it.  In appreciation to yourself and others.
