Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA to solve brickwalls?
« on: Sunday 14 April 24 10:10 BST (UK)  »

So DNA does solve or help breaking down walls.

 :)

Yes, but that's very recent. Once you get further back, it's not so easy.

I have two groups of matches who match each other on my paternal side, and one on my maternal side. They are largely full of matches who don't have trees, or have private trees. The ones who have private trees don't turn up in any search for any locality my family lived in, and the few who have useful sized public trees usually turn out to be based in the States, and not have managed to cross the Pond yet.

And two of my paternal brick walls are in parts of the country which have no group of unknown matches to even look at. My great grandmother (an only child) came from Oxfordshire, and should have several matches of a reasonable size, but there's absolutely nothing from her locality at all.

Just not that simple, and very dependent on who has tested.

The Lighter Side / Re: 'Put away?'

Happened at all levels of society. The late Queen had two cousins in an Asylum in Surrey, Katherine and Nerissa Bowes Lyon

But I found recently that someone adjudged to be a dangerous lunatic was recommended to be moved "some considerable distance" from his home area, as "it would be better" for both him and his wife. Visits from her seemed to upset him, which in turn made him violent. The staff thought he should have been in Broadmoor. This was around 1890.

The Common Room / New Ethic breakdown on Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 20 March 24 18:50 GMT (UK)  »
Just received an email saying they’d updated, so went and had a look.

For the first time, they've correctly identified both my father’s paternal heritage in Cheshire, and my mother’s in Northumbria / Scotland.

BUT - they’ve completely removed all trace of my father’s maternal links to London, the south east, Oxfordshire and East Anglia. There’s not that many DNA links to that part of my tree (well, there won’t be when an only child has an only child, who married an only child), but there’s just nothing showing, even with known matches.

Anyone else seeing part of their DNA disappear??

Just found this in 1891:

80 Wilberforce St, Pudsey, Yorkshire
Frederick Smith   aged 41 General labourer  Born Poole
Fanny Smith aged 33  born Bottesford
children Frederick (aged 11, Battersea), Louisa (aged 10, Hull), Walter (aged 8, Hull), Ellen (aged 7, Hull), William (aged 5, Skipton), Edward (aged 3, Frodsham)

District 23, Piece 3658, Folio 72

Why they would be named "Smith", I don't know, unless they were trying to disappear.

Technical Help / Re: New Ancestry Stories interface

Have you tried reducing the size of the text (Control-Minus)?

Got it! I have the site set to 110% because of sight issues. It's never been a problem up till now, but clearly I'm going to have to reduce the size on that page.  :(

Technical Help / New Ancestry Stories interface
« on: Saturday 03 February 24 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
Ancestry have changed their Stories interface

Fine. They've changed so much recently, that's no surprise.

But when I try and use the new interface, I can paste the story in OK, but saving it is another matter. It's fine if I try on Edge or my iPad Safari, but not on Firefox (which I always use) - the Save and Cancel buttons at the bottom of the Edit panel are missing. Once I have the Story in place, I can edit it OK, the buttons are there. I think there's a small corner of the Cancel button on the top right corner, but no sign anywhere of Save.

I have tried clearing cache and cookies, and removing my extensions, as per their advice page. Nothing doing.

If I contact Ancestry, they are going to say it's my browser.

Is this happening to anyone else? If not, what do I try next?

Northamptonshire / Re: 1794 Upton marriage - Edward Thompson & Elizabeth Marriott
« on: Thursday 01 February 24 00:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Sarah,

Had a look for this, and it appears this is not the Northamptonshire Upton. This is Upton by Southwell in Nottinghamshire. FreeReg confirms the marriage, but whether this is the marriage you are seeking, I don’t know.

Afraid I couldn’t see an Edward & Elizabeth Thompson married in Northamptonshire..
