Don, Harry & Dorrie, thanks for info on The Royal Hotel & Shetland.

I will continue to follow up this family & time spent on Shetland. Looking forward to a visit in next year, probably during the summer months due to weather!

Very true Dorrie regarding finding deaths at a very young age.

This family had 4 children. 3 of them died of whooping couch ages 3, 1 & 4 months old, only 6 weeks between the 3 deaths in total. Deaths all registered on same day, 28 March 1898 at Lerwick.

The 4th child of the family James Paton Robertson, died at The Somme in 1917, age 24.

Thanks for info, much appreciated.

A quick check of this address reveals this is now Boots Pharmacy. The family moved from Edinburgh to Shetland around 1897. John Robertson was originally from Shetland and returned with his family. 3 young children to the family died between Feb - March 1898 from whooping cough, tragic circumstances. John also died in April 1898 from Phthisis.

Thanks again.

Shetland / The Royal Hotel, Lerwick - Robertson family
« on: Saturday 20 June 20 10:34 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother Lizzie Robertson and her husband James Robertson were proprietors of The Royal Hotel, Lerwick in 1898.

Looking to clarify where in Lerwick The Royal Hotel was positioned? Checked old maps etc and found Queens Hotel & Grand Hotel but not The Royal Hotel. Anyone know where The Royal Hotel was, if name changed / long demolished? Hoping to visit Shetland in next year.

Thanks for any help.

« on: Friday 01 May 20 21:38 BST (UK)  »
Looking for help in trying to pinpoint where Regina Cottage, Oakfield, Kelty, Fife was?

My 2 x great grandparents, James Anderson born 1839  & Janet Sharp born 1845 & family stayed at this address in 1901 census.

I’ve checked old maps of Kelty area etc but can’t find exactly where this Cottage was? Tried various searches but unable to pinpoint.

Thanks for any assistance.

Fife / Re: Cemetery Search for a 'Donibristle' death in 1866

Dunfermline Crematorium holds records of deaths for that area. Mossgreen Cemetery has burials from that time and is about half a mile from Donibristle Village. Most burials at that time did not have headstones.

The family move to London, England for the 1861 and 1871 census which you may have already. Appear still to be together in 1901 census in England. William appears to change his birthplace from Ireland to Scotland as the census records progress.

1861 census
Name:   Fanny Bathgate
Age:   38
Estimated birth year:   1823
Spouse's name:   William Bathgate
Where born:   Edinburgh, Scotland
Civil Parish:   Islington St Mary
County/Island:   Middlesex
Name   Age
William Bathgate   38
Fanny Bathgate   38
George F B Bathgate   9
John S Bathgate   5

Clackmannanshire / Re: William Snadon and Janet Edie
« on: Tuesday 31 July 18 14:31 BST (UK)  »
I know it's a really long shot, but is there anyone who traces back to William Snadon and Janet Edie,

Hi, I have William Snadon and Janet Edie in my tree and they are my 6 x great grandparents. Their daughter, Elizabeth Snadon born 1751, married Andrew Bernard born 1744. Both Elizabeth and Andrew were born in Clackmannan, Scotland, from my records and they are my 5 x great grandparents.

I have recently received my DNA results and I also have found several relations with links to Salt Lake City / Mormon Church of LDS, through the surname Sharp from Clackmannanshire area of Scotland. Sharp family also feature on my tree. I'm based in Fife, Scotland.
