This can get confusing for newcomers, so here are a few words of explanation ...

At the top of every RootsChat page you will see three lines/links

Welcome back, Josephine Soap, you have xxx messages, yy are new.
Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.

If you click on the xxx messages you will come to your Personal Messages (PM)
These are private and only you can see them.

Show unread posts since last visit.
Any new topic, or any topic that has been replied to, since you last logged in will be found in this list.

Show new replies to your posts.
If you reply to any topic, or start up a topic yourself, then anytime anybody replies to this topic,
it will appear in this list, regardless of whether or not the reply was meant specifically for you.

It might help to read the text "as is" but think of it as meaning:
"Show new replies to any topics to which you have also replied"

E-mail notification
In a way, this is similar to the Show new replies to your posts list
If you reply to any topic, or start up a topic yourself, then you will receive an e-mail notification,
"a reply has been made on a topic you are interested in", anytime somebody replies to this topic,
regardless of whether or not the reply was meant specifically for you.
The reply itself is on the topic.

You can switch e-mail notifications on and off,
either individually, when you are replying to a topic,
or globally, in your profile : "Notifications and Email" and "Personal Message Options"
or at any other time, by clicking on the "Notify" button at the top or bottom of the topic.

And by the way, that only applies to e-mail notifications;
sorry, but you cannot switch off entries in the
Show unread posts since last visit. or the Show new replies to your posts.  list.

Unfortunately, there is no standard "naming convention" on RootsChat;
when talking about their input on RootsChat:
- Some people say message, meaning "Personal Message/PM"
- Some people say message, meaning "Reply to topic"
- Some people say "e-mail" meaning "Reply to Topic"
- Some people say "e-mail" meaning "Personal Message/PM"
Added: (see Reply #4)
- Some people say posting, meaning "Reply to topic"

Hope this helps,
Bob
Dear Bob how can I reply to Steven Goss please? from confused Diane.

Australia Lookups completed / Re: Brocks in Australia

My Brocks originated from Guernsey. They moved around quite a bit. Spending time in Devon, Somerset/Gloucester (mainly Bristol/Clifton/Bedminster), London and Wales.

I don't think we have any connection to Brocks in Norfolk. They were a family with connections to the military and medical fraternities. Do these places or occupations mean anything to you?

Other names connected with the family are Kortright, Aikin, Carter, Bevan/s and Pearce.

Hope this helps

Gina
Hi Gina, Wales and Devon are my Brock line mainly..We may have connections, best wishes from Diane now residing in Australia. I would luv to hear from you thanks Diane

Hi Meles, well thank you for so much information here.  I know my Brock line came from Devon to Wales. Also you may have heard of Peter Brock the racing driver [now deceaced] from Australia, well he was a cousin of my mother. My grandmother Emily Willmett well her mother was married to a man from my Brock line her maiden name was Annie probably from the Sayer family[not as yet perfectly confermed though]                   It looks like you maybe in New Zealand [such a pretty place ] I went there to work years ago now, my daughters partner os also from New Zealand. I am situated in Australia. I have many names of my Brock line but they are all from Swansea Wales area. Do you have a Tommy Brock in your tree ? He apparantley got married twice -had many children. more later on . Regards Diane.

I suggest, if you want free sites, you start using FreeBMD and FamilySearch.

Also consider alternative spellings!  In this case the name is Stephen, not Steven :-\

Finally, unless you know that he has died, you should not be naming living people. Or those potentially living?
It's RootsChat rules to avoid spammers and identity theft.
I understand!

Hmmm

Maybe I haven't made myself clear.

You have asked us to help?

We need to know how you get to identifying S T G as your target.

No-one wants to duplicate your(anyone's)  research, what a waste of time / effort ?!?
No-one wants to research a name ( S T G ) without knowing (the) valid links (already in your knowledge).

Cheers!

Ray
WHATEVER! Cheers! I understand now!! I placed the word' Anyone' because I was thinking to ask if 'Anyone'- who are 'readers' out there with the same names as I am trying to research!hmmn! Will not do thet again!!
