Could the box be a book?

My thoughts too. Maybe a bible?
It could be. I’m now wondering if there is lettering on the front spelling his name, ‘Darius’ what do you think?

It could be couldn’t it. Is there some writing on the cover? My x3 great grandfather was called Darius, could it say that sideways?

It's never easy to ascertain whether it's a boy or girl, but I think it could be a boy. Girls had a centre parting and boys had a side parting. The item could be a family photo album.
Take a look here:

Thanks Carol, that’s really helpful

Unless he is wearing fancy dress, then I am sure that this is a girl - the bonnet.  :)

No idea about the box.
Yes, the bonnet did it for me, and the necklace!

This is a watercolour supposedly of my x3 great grandfather when he was 4, dated 1849

I know boys wore gowns etc, but everything about this photo to me looks like a girl; could it be a boy and is his clothing usual for the time? What could the box be?

Thanks, Christian

I really really appreciate everyone’s efforts, thank you.
I think I might never find who her parents were. I’m particularly invested in her maternal lines as it relates to a mtDNA match with my Mum

Dumfriesshire / Search for Mary Consterdine
« on: Sunday 03 April 22 08:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Mary Consterdine married William Hough 16 Dec 1873 in Manchester. She appears in later census with him and her children and it states born Scotland or born Dumfries, Scotland. On the marriage record her father is named as David Consterdine.
There is a Mary Consterdine born and baptised at a similar time in Lancashire, with David as her father, but it’s not the same person - this one goes on to marry a Charles McKnight

Is anyone able to find my Mary Consterdine in Scotland please? I assume the surname spelling may vary. Hoping someone can help

Thanks
