I mean,  I was sure that it was him so I had ordered a copy of his Naturalisation papers but when they arrived I realised it wasn't him.

He was an engineering, listing himself as a 'machine fitter/repairer' on the census.

Wow Middlesbrough!!!!! Where did you find that? Brilliant find, can you send me the link?

Ah, that looks likely to be her Jomot - thank you for your help, I will order the certificate and let you know.

I've tried searching everywhere but can't find any more information unfortunately. It's taken my months and months to get even this far!  :-[

No newspaper articles to be found, no wills or death certificates for neither Charles or Catherine that I can see.

I had thought that the naturalisation record above would be his but on arrival I discovered it's not him. He's very illusive, it's a nightmare

Family History Beginners Board / Knock down brick wall
« on: Thursday 20 April 17 18:23 BST (UK)  »
Finally I'm starting to be able to chisel away at a brick wall I've had for months and months. My great great grandfather, Charles Nilsson b. 1858 in Sweden married Catherine Fellows b. 1867 in Birmingham. They married in 1886 in Sheffield and moved to the North east. For months and months I've been stumped as to why she didn't appear on the 1911 census with him and the youngest of the kids and why a housekeeper was listed instead. Charles, housekeeper Catherine Winspeak and three youngest children are residing at 118 Avondale Rd in Byker. Yesterday I found a second 1911 census completed my Catherine at 15 Wharton St, Gateshead completed very sparsely (no age for anyone or occupations) claiming that Charles and the three kids were in the house with her.

I do believe it is possible that he had left her and was no less residing with the housekeeper and had possibly taken the children with him.

Please can someone help me with just where I go from here. I'm desperate to know more but just don't know where to go from here.

Family History Beginners Board / Phillip/Henry Martin
« on: Monday 10 April 17 13:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I am trying to trace my x3 great grandfather. His name at birth was Philip Henry Martin however went by Henry all his life. I have him on the 1881 census in prison, 6 months into his 12 month sentence of hard labour for the attempted murder of his wife Nicholasina. I can't find anything of him after this until a POSSIBLE sighting in 1905 working on a Royal Mail carrier ship RMT Aragon. The name listed is Henry Philip Martin so it's possible it isn't him. Does anyone know where I could find any more details about the Henry Phillip working on the Aragon? Or how I could confirm that this was him. Or if it isn't him then how I could find him?

He went by Henry on all official documents like Census.

wow, I had never heard of someone being 'beached' before - it sounds awful. Hopefully I can track him down somewhere and he had, for whatever reason, just run away to start afresh. Regarding his father,  Henry Martin b. 1846 in Cornwall - I have him right up until 1880 in Haswell when he was sentenced to 12 months hard labour for attempting to murder Nicholasina. I wonder since Nicholasina remarried in 1890 and since I can find no record of a divorce - did he die during his hard labour? I can find no record of him at all after 1880.

Family History Beginners Board / HELP - Missing Ancester!
« on: Thursday 02 March 17 11:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Im looking for advice on how to trace an illusive family member, Charles Atkinson Martin. He was born in Cramlington in 1869/70 and married Mary Ellen Hammell and started a family. His father was Philip Henry Martin (1846-?) and his mother, Nicholasina Atkinson (1850-?). He was a boatswain and I've got him up until 1901 on the census on a vessel, the Constantine, in Durham and thats the last time I have him.

The family story goes that he jumped ship in Australia never to return and 3 of his sons went off in search of him only to go missing and be presumed dead themselves. I already know that the latter part is not true - some of his sons did die but they did not go in search.

I also struggle to find deaths for his mother and father. I have found newspaper aticles regarding them (they were *cough* colourful *cough* characters, to say the least).

If anyone could help with how I would go about tracking him down (or at least trying to!) I would be very grateful, thank you.

Hi Ian,

Wow I didn't even think that his surname could be any variations of his fathers name - talk about making things complicated! No wonder I'm having such a difficult time to find information, that along with the various spellings of the surname (Nilsson, Neilson, Nileson) I have come across *SIGH*

I have find a possible death in Durham in 1939 for a Charles Nielsen aged 81 (b. 1858) which ties in with my Charles so I have ordered that certificate too and hopefully it will be a match. I will let you know when this and his marriage certificate comes and any information on it.

Thank you for the information on Gustaf, I have tried to search the records for the Midland Railway but can't seem to find any variations of Charles' name that would be a match.

This is so difficult but I hope we can get somewhere.

Thank you so much for your continuing help - I'm extremely grateful.

Hi there Yorkslass,

Wow thank you for that, it certainly looks like that is is him as his occupation listed later on is the same as on the 1881 census - machine fitter.

Here's hoping this is the start of something of something now

Thank you all for your help. I had seen that he was living with catherine winspear in 1911, shes recorded as a housekeeper. Is it possible his wife had died? I cant find a death record for her. I have ordered a copy of the marriage certificate so i will let you know exactly what is on it when it arrives.

I find it strange that I cant even find a death record for him - if i could find that it would at least be a start but its all just dead ends. :'(
