Wow,

So much to ask about your side and so much to tell you about this strand of the Woolnough clan.

Currently on train home so will have to wait to properly respond.

My father is John Michael Frederick Woolnough. You are right about the cancer.

Regards,

Jools

Hi there Sadcatlady,

Frederick Ephraim Woolnough (1879-1960) was my great-grandfather. You mention the fact that your husbands grandfather was F E Woolnough. I wonder if you are the South African branch of the Woolnough's and that your husbands father was Edward A Woolnough who emigrated to S Africa in 1948.

Ephraim Woolnough (1815-1869) parents were Charles Woolnough and Lydia Goldsmith were married on 11 Jan 1803 in Grundisburgh, Suffolk. I haven't managed to find Lydia's birth or death evidence yet. But she must have died before 1822. Charles remarried Susan on 30 Jan 1822. Susan's maiden name was Pollard before getting married to Daniel Cottermole in 1808 and then remarrying Charles.

Where my information gets a bit hazy, Charles' father was Robert Woolnough (born 1757) and mother was Susan Woolnough (another Susan!). Robert Woolnough's father was another Robert Woolnough, who was married to Dorcas Woolnough, although this is getting very hazy!

Hope this helps a little bit.

Regards,

Jools

Ciderdrinker,

That's a lot to take in. Thanks for the info. I will sift through and add to my records.

Were the parents of Charles (Chas) Woolnough called Robert and Susan? There's a baptism record showing that a Charles was baptised in Dennington on 27 Jun 1783.

Hi there,

Having looked at the marriage certificate and then your email I was trying to tie down the births and deaths of Lydia (nee Goldsmith), Susan (nee Cottermole) and Charles Woolnough.

I see that there are potentially two Lydia's in the region born in the 1780's: 1781 in Otley and 1783 in Butley. Would you happen to know which one was married to Charles?

From the 1841 census, I am assuming that Ephraim has left home for London and William is at the Red Lion. Were this both Lydia's children and the rest were Susan's?

From the 1841 census, I see that there is a Susan Drake at the inn. Was she just a guest or is she related in some way?

Jools

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Sarah Sneyd

I see its been a few years since Sarah Woolnough (mn. Sneyd) has come up.

I have a question as to whether she emigrated to Australia in 1913 together with her youngest son, Edward George Woolnough?

Her husband, Ephraim William Woolnough, had died in 1904 and their children had grown up.

I have seen a passenger list with her name on and a separate one with her sons name on both leaving on separate boats to Queensland.

Any information anyone?

Hi there,

I was wondering whether you got anywhere with Ephraim Woolnough 10 years ago?

I am a direct descendent of him and have ordered the marriage certificate between him and Mary which should turn up later this week.

Regards,

Jools
