Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Census Lookup please - HARDY
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 18:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I came across this post recently as I have been researching my Hardy lineage.  My great grandfather James Richard Hardy b. 1847 married to Lavinia Stevens immigrated to the U.S. from Manchester in the mid 1800s.  His father was also James Richard b. 1823 married to Mary Tonge.  His father was a John Hardy.  I was excited when I saw this post. It seemed to match up! However, as I have looked through census lists, birth and marriage certificates, the John Hardy on birth and marriage certificates for James Richard say his occupation is a hatter.  The John Hardy married to Esther say he is a laborer on the 1841 and 1851 census lists so doesn't appear they are the same person.  I posted in the Manchester section a couple of weeks ago and several people assisted with gathering information.  It looks like the possible correct John Hardy married Ann Hasleham.  His occupation is listed as a hatter.  But I cannot find a John and Ann Hardy that matches up on other lists really.  I know this post was from 11 years ago so I realize the original posters may not see it or have any additional information but would love to hear from you if you read this!! Or anyone else!!

It would seem that the James Richard living with John and Esther Hardy on the 1841 census is the one linked to my great grandfather.  His occupation is listed as ap plumber.  His marriage certificate, 1851 census and birth certificate of son lists him as a plumber.  However, as pointed out, John is listed as laborer on 1841 census but as hatter on James Richard marriage certificate.  The Peter listed above was a hatter.  If he is the father of John, could there have been a change in profession?

I gathered the information on John Hardy via google search.  This led me to a Rootschat post from the year 2006.  (This is how I discovered Rootschat  :) ) It included 1841 census info.  John was age 35 and his wife Esther age 25 was listed on census. A comment was made that they didn't realize John had a second wife.  The children listed on census were James Richard age 15 and Emma 6 months.

Thank you all for the information!  I do not know how to reply separately to each.  Is there any information regarding John's parents?

My great grandfather James Richard Hardy b. 1847 traveled to the United States around 1900 from Lancashire.  He was married to a Lavinia Stevens.  I think his father was also James Richard b.1823 married to Mary Ann Tonge and his father was John Hardy.  I have found who I think is the correct John Hardy but not completely sure.  His second wife was Esther but not sure who James' mother was.
First name Ann? Hope to hear from anyone connected to the family or has information!

Best regards,

Cindy
