New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: The Schauer family's Migration to New Zealand
« on: Monday 18 November 19 23:22 GMT (UK)  »
FaganShaw,

How unexpected! I'm so glad to hear from you. Since I'd first posted here I'd occasional tried over and over to look for a living relative on the Schauer side but to no such luck. Happy you've finally appeared and are interested in the old days.

I hope you might have some insights that I couldn't have thought up. And it's quite amazing your mum's generation are still around. From what I can gather, they would be the last children of that generation, and might have the faintest memory of their parents lives. Maybe a story or two? I believe my parent would be your mum's 2nd cousin.

In the meantime I've got a little collection of notes about the Schauers but there's still a lot I need to do, and haven't touched it in quite some time.

Look forward to hearing back.

Down / Re: Moore and Duff families of Killyleagh, Down.
« on: Sunday 24 March 19 03:27 GMT (UK)  »
A lot later, I know, but I feel like there's still something to be found here.

I just discovered that there was a family called the Moores who moved to Killinchy, Ireland to have their children and the family story goes that when they migrated to Ireland from the USA they changed their name to Muir so all the following children had that surname.

There was a William Muir that was born 1822 in Killinchy, Ireland, so was his next sibling. Though what's interesting about this William is that his following sibling after that was born in Killyleagh. But the most interesting thing still is that the mother of William Muir was named Agnes Patton. Daughter of a Patrick and Elizabeth Patton.

I don't know where to start with this one. I can't even find Agnes' birth cert. Any ideas?

Monmouthshire / House Schedules for Garndiffaith and Abersychan in the 1850's
« on: Tuesday 17 April 18 09:58 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find how close a number of families were living by each other. The most I have to go off is the Schedule number on the 1851 Census.

Garndiffaith Schedules: 29, 93, 106, 180

Abersychan Schedules: 63, 113, 139

Pontnewynydd (St Luke District) Schedule: 12, No 2 Butlers houses. (*Police station house was schedule 10* which itself was next to the Underwoods Cottages)

They all sound like they could be close to one another. I just can't place where in general area that they were in. Does someone here know the area better?

Oh no. Pontypool has a little bit missing, though it doesn't say the Trevethin area.
Pieces of Machen too, which is a pain. Probably why I can't find my relative there either.

Caroline was the last child. The one before that was Jabez, so that's a fairly unique name to look for. I imagine their section taking up most of a page. I was able to find their eldest Jane living in Pontypool. She's married under the name Ashman and is working as a servant, age 19. Not sure where her husband John is. Jane came out with her parents. So I know they're around there somewhere.

Damn those missing pages.. Maybe there is still hope for me

Census and Resource Discussion / Finding the Robbins families in the 1861 Census.
« on: Monday 16 April 18 12:00 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to chase down a pair of families that were living in Trevethin in 1841 and 1851. They left for Australia in 1864, together, but I can't find them in any census online for 1861. It's like everyone went into hiding that year. Or maybe someone's handwriting is too atrocious to transcribe that year. It's hard to know.

I presume they're unsearchable though the new means, and I'd have to run through the old books page by page in that area. Are there any tips on how to narrow that task down?

The family is Job and Martha Cleaves (nee Robbins).

In 1851. Martha's married, and her brother George Robbins lives with her.

In the same year, Her parents George and Sarah Robbins live down the road with the rest of the family.

By 1861. I'd presume they'd still be in Trevethin, Monmouthshire. The Cleaves should have 7 or 8 children with them at this point. The parents George and Sarah Robbins might have only their son John Robbins living with them still.

Martha's brother Isaac Robbins would be married with Ann and have a child named Mary Ann. Age 5 or so. I haven't found him either.

All the other siblings have left for Australia already.

Job Cleaves is from High Littleton, Somerset, Martha is from Trevethin, Monmouthshire. Does anyone had have an idea how I'd find them?

Minniehaha! Nice job finding those :) Thanks for that.

Because Gustave and Bertha married in 1922, There's no hope of seeing who their children were, or if the had any. He was 37 and she was 32. Possible they still had a child or two.

I'll keep those siblings names for a rainy day in case someone on that side of the family knows what happened to Bertha.

I just found Gustave's brother Frederick William Schauer's death. 1836 in NSW under the surname name 'Shaw'. Has the right parents :) It's all coming together. His wife Kathleen Mary Kirchhubel (Married 1908 in Victoria) seems to have died in Prahran under the name Catherine Mary Shaw, parents Herman Kirchhubel and Katilda Greenway (Matilda?)

Still looking for Eric William Schauer, son of Herman and Constance. His brother Herman died in Australia as Shaw, and his father 1919 in New Zealand. Not sure where he got to.

Hi Jamjar, That seem to be her. I'm not sure who did it, but I also found some names on a historical blog that noted that Bertha's birth was 24 Feb 1890 Wairau, NZ. Though I can't find her in the NZ bdm.

I also found Herman Albert Thompson Schauer born in NZ 1907
Then I find him dying in Malvern, Victoria under the name Shaw in 1952

So there is another case of going by the name of 'Shaw'
It's tough to track down Gustave. I wonder if he kept the Schauer since his wife did.
The real tough part is trying to understand what happened to their youngest sister, Marie Elizabeth Schauer. Who on her marriage cert has the Herman as the father, except he's been dead for years, and her mother was married to John Davey 4 years earlier. She just vanishes from records.

Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm still trying to find the boats that took them out to NZ. Though I'm not sure when they left, but I imagine between 1914-1915.

It's nice to know that Malvern address. I'm thinking that's the one that appeared on Marie Fox's brother's war papers.

I had another forum trying to trace Marie's family too. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=787287.0

Alexander Fox ties into this family, so born in Perth. I linked Alexander to this family with his birthdate Marie left in his bible. The date matched the birthdate of Alxander Fox in WA belonging to this family, thanks to a wonderful lady's research from the WA state library. Perth, WA was also on Alexander and Maries marriage cert.

Thanks MalNZ for looking into that. I always felt he would be there in person, which felt like a bit of a stretch. I leaves me to think that he was trying to enter the Pub business like his sister-in-law's husband, who he lived with for a brief period. I hope you're enjoying your travels!
