Rosie-Thank you.  I will look there.

Radcliff- Yes, I know her death was after the 1861 census and before John died in 1871 as he is listed as a widower.  I can't seem to find her death record/certificate which is one of the struggles I'm having now.

Skoosh-Thank you for the hint.  I shall look there.

Looking for the birthplace in Ireland of John McBride  b.1801 in Ireland (local is unknown).  He married Margaret Hunter (presumably in Ireland).  They emigrated to Campbeltown Scotland somewhere between 1826 and 1832, given their children's POB in the Scotland Census.  I can't find Margaret's death information but she preceeded James in death.  He died 1 Apr 1871 in Partick, Lanarkshire.  My beginner skills have hit a wall.  Any direction will be greatly appreciated!

By the way, in the Ward's directory  dated 1936 under the Whitley Bay area there is a 'James C Read' listed under 18 Seatonville Road M.  He is recorded as a manager.  All M addresses denote Monkseaton

This is under the alphabetical part rather than the street key so if this is your James this may have been work address rather than home address.

In 1938 the same entry but now he is on the telephone - (T923)

These directories are held at North Shields library in the local studies department.

That's awesome!  Thank you so much.  I kept running across a James Read fish monger who had four sons named as mourners, one of which was James.  Its a possible connection but I have no evidence.

Salop is a name for Shropshire. A Salopian is a person who lives/was born in the county.
According to Your Dictionary website* Salop is Early Middle English, a shortening of Salopescira from Old English Scropscir and possibly from Scrobbesbyrigscir.
Some of those words are proper Old English. What was written the census return was modern English, only a century or so since! I expected to see an extract in Secretary Hand or similar.  ;D
* Definition from Webster's New World College Dictionary 5th Edition 2014

Thank you.

Can I just check that you're going for Much Wenlock which exists rather than Whenlosst which doesn't?

I appreciate that.  Ironically, I feel "whenlosst" quite often while researching.
 ;)

How is your reading of olde English?  In the 1851 Census for Bilston, Wolverhampton, there is a listing for Richard Cooper (scribed Rich) with wife Ruth and 4 children.  It appears to me that Richard was not born in England but I can't make out where his birthplace is, as written.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.
