Thanks Ian for the interesting and very helpful information.  The penalty for desertion was certainly severe.  It provides insight into what was likely to be my ancestor's motivation to migrate to Australia under a false name in 1838.
How did you access Regiment Muster Rolls?  Where are these records held?
Thanks,
Peter

Thanks Bev.  I shall check it out.  He is proving very elusive.

Thanks.   I've found a reference to a court martial.

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Robert Crawford 1812 Haddington

Does anyone know of a Crawford family that lived in Haddington between 1810 and 1840?
I am researching Robert Crawford of Haddingtonshire who was listed as an Army Deserters  from 1st Foot in 1838.
To trace him my only information is the birthplace details given on the deserter list -  born at Haddington in 1812.  (There is also a mention of Dunbar).
I suspect he made himself disappear after the desertion
I have searched records on Findmypast, Ancestry.com and familysearch.org but cannot find any reference to his birth or baptism in Haddingtonshire.
Is there anything I can do?
My ancestor came to Australia from Glasgow, using  a false name, in 1838.  I believe his real name was "Robert Crawford"  - possibly the army deserter?
Thanks,
Peter

Armed Forces / 1st Foot Deserter in 1838

Can anyone give advice on where more information can be found on my army deserter?
I am seeking information about Robert Crawford who appears on the Army Deserters list in 1838.
The record states he was born in 1813 at Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland although I can find no record of this birth.  He deserted from the 1st Battalion, 1st Foot on 27th October, 1838.
I found a reference that the battalion was stationed in Edinburgh in June, 1838 (Caledonian Mercury, page4).
Where can I go with this?  Is it a dead end?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
