Many thanks Gardener for the private message regarding this post. I have sent a private message to Givauden. Hopefully we can together fill in some gaps in our family trees.
Cheers

Thank you Irene and Caz
Both very good and much appreciated.
You really had me puzzled Caz about finding another girl's face but after much scrutiny I it does look like someone is sitting some way behind the group in the paddock.

It doesn't look like much of a place to have a picnic or whatever it was they were doing sitting in the dirt. (perhaps food in the suitcase?)
My mother in law said the photo was of her Mother, Father and sister, taken on on the "Queens Domain" (a reserve for the people to use)  in Hobart, Tasmania...the photo has 1937 written on the back. Curious.
Thanks again
Jackie

Thank you both for your efforts. They are fantastic.
My Mother in Law will be very pleased.
I will own up to getting help and not take the credit myself. :)
Kind regards
Jackie

Oh very good! That was quick...Thank you.
I can have a go at cleaning it up a bit myself.

My Mother in law has requested me to tidy up and remove the man from the centre of this photo (and his hands on the shoulders of the ladies)  but I am making a mess of it so far. Any help will be gratefully received. No need for colour. Thanks again
I do have a larger file that may be sent to anyone who needs it for easier repair.

This photo is in a bad way! My mother in law requested me to restore it but it is way beyond my meagre capabilities. I would appreciate any attempts to remove some of the awful creases. No need for colour.
I do have a larger file available that I can send to interested restorers if necessary.
Thanks in advance

That makes even more sense as her mother's name was Martha.

Thanks for the replies.
As far as I am aware there have been no Scottish ancestry links in Dad's family prior to my Grandfathers time.
At least it does give me something to go on and I will try looking for a Margaret O'Doherty in the registers etc.
Meta (maybe Margaret) was born in Northern Ireland possibly in or near Portstewart and probably around 1935-40. She left Ireland and went to USA in the 1950's and had only minor contact with one sister many years ago. Now all her siblings are deceased but as she was the youngest there is a possibility that she is still living in the USA. I will keep trying. Nothing is impossible with the internet now!

Ireland / A question about nicknames
« on: Wednesday 15 August 07 10:37 BST (UK)  »
I have for years been searching for an Aunt Meta O'Doherty. I know that her family had a habit of using their second names or even changing names.... for instance My dad was called "Joe", his shortened second name and his sister Mary Agnes was called Nancy. (Since discovered this is a common alternate name for Agnes)

Anyway, I have recently discovered a "Margaret" also called "Meta". Can ayone tell me if this a common nickname (in use in Ireland) for Margaret as this might give me a lead if my Meta's real given name is actually Margaret.
Thanks
Jackie
