Northumberland / Re: Jane ATKINSON, 1800s, NBL

I am sure I am going to sound very stupid right now, but how do you get access to the 1871 & 1861 census records.  I have disks of  both the 1871 & 1861 Northumberland Census and finally found both families in 1861 but I could only find John and Mary ATKINSON in 1871.  It is hard for me to find families on the disks.  There has to be a better way.
I will go take a look at the freeBMD site again for the marriages you mention.

I don't have any children for them born before abt. 1862.  The children I do have, except Martha,  all came from the 1881 census.  William and Jane married in 1857 so there could be several children that weren't on the 1881 census with them or that died before it.

Hi Michael,
Thank you for the location clarification.  That really helps.  It is hard to look at Streetmap UK and get a feel for that when you are not really that familiar with the area.
In answer to your question, William Fairbairn's father was named William.   The name William doesn't show up on the 1881 census until the 3rd son.  Likewise Jane Atkinson's father was John and I don't have that name at all in their children.  William Fairbairn married Jane Atkinson on 10 Oct 1857 but the eldest children I have were born about 1862, so there should have been others that may have died early.

Thank you Audrey.  Right now I don't know if either of those could be her since she is shown born in both Durham and Northumberland in the census but it looks like her mother's name could be named Mary if this is indeed her family of ATKINSON that I have found.

This is all very confusing since the 1881 Bedlington Census (RG11, folio 5116/50 pg 14) shows Jane with her husband and children and says:
William FAIRBAIRN    Head M  Male 48 Ripon, York, coal miner
Jane FAIRBAIRN        Wife  M  Fem  42 Kenton, NBL
Robert FAIRBAIRN     Son   U  Male 19 Bedlington, NBL, coal miner
George FAIRBAIRN    Son   U  Male 17 Bedlington, coal miner
Margaret FAIRBAIRN Dau   U  Fem  15 Bedlington
etc.

The 1851 Durham one (HO107/2390 ED3 pg39) with her possible parents gives it:
John ATKINSON     Head M 46  Newburn, DUR, coal miner
Mary ATKINSON     Wife  M 46  NBL
John ATKINSON     Son   U  17  DUR, coal miner
William ATKINSON  Son  U  15  DUR, coal miner
? ATKINSON           Son   U 13  DUR, coal miner
Jane ATKINSON      Dau      11  DUR
Martha ATKINSON  Dau        6  DUR
George ATKINSON  Son        4  DUR

Three of the same children are born in NBL instead of DUR in 1861 Census Bedlington (RG9/3873 ED6 folio 25 pg 44):
John ATKINSON      Head M  56 Denton Burn, DUR, coal miner
Mary ATKINSON      Wife  M  55 Willington, NBL
John ATKINSON      Son   U  26  Bishop Auckland, DUR, coal miner
William ATKINSON  Son   U  24  Seghill, NBL, coal miner
Martha ATKINSON  Dau       16  Orpeth, NBL
George ATKINSON  Son       13  Orpeth, NBL, scholar

They even change birth towns in the 1871 Bedlington Census (RG10/5165 ED5 folio 127 pg 34):
John ATKINSON     Head  M 66  Newburn, NBL, coal miner
Mary ATKINSON     Wife   M 64  Longbenton, NBL
John ATKINSON      Son   U 37  Auckland, DUR, coal miner
William ATKINSON  Son   U 34  Earsdon NBL, coal miner
George ATKINSON  Son   U 24  Pelton, DUR, coal miner

By 1881 the Census in Longbenton (RG11 folio 5086/97 pg 20) they are:
John ATKINSON      Head  M  76  Newburn, NBL, coal miner
John ATKINSON      Son    U  47  St Helens Auckland, DUR, coal miner
William ATKINSON  Son    U  44   Seghill, NBL,  farmer of 51 acres
Mary ATKINSON      Wife   M  76   Benton, NBL

Northumberland / Jane ATKINSON, 1800s, NBL

I am resarching the ancestors of my g.g. grandmother Jane ATKINSON, age 42 on the 1881 Bedlington census.  I have found a possible mother for Jane, father John, who married William FAIRBAIRN, pitman, on 10 Oct 1857 in Auckland, but I don't know if there is any real link at this point.
I found an 1881 census in Newburn with a coalminer John ATKINSON, wife Mary, and 2 older unmarried sons.  The oldest son, John (age 47), was born in Auckland, where my Jane ATKINSON was married.  Earlier census records from Bedlington (1871 & 1861) and 1851 Durham show a family with a daughter Jane born about 1840 along with 5 siblings: John, William, ?, Martha & George.  Son John is 17 in 1851 so may or may not be the oldest child.
On-line I found a marriage for a John ATKINSON to a Mary on 2 Jun 1826 in Wallsend.  She was Mary Ann FORSTER, who was born in Longbenton (like the Mary on the 1871 census, it is called Benton on the 1881 census).  Also looking on-line I found 3 daughters born in Wallsend: Isabella Forster, Elizabeth and Isabella Seymow.  Their christening dates would not exclude them from the same family but there is no record of them of the 4 census records I saw.
I was hoping that someone might recognize them and could tell me if I was on the right track or not.  I wish I could feel a little more sure that John ATKINSON (b. 31 Aug 1808, Newburn) and Mary Ann FORSTER (b. 19 Sept 1803, Longbenton; d. 3rd Qtr. 1884, Tynemouth District) are the parents of Jane ATKINSON that I am looking for.  Since Jane's Marriage Certificate doesn't say much about her father other than that he was named John and was a pitman, I don't know if this John from Newburn was him.  Can anyone help me or do you have any ideas about how to proceed from here?
