Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Has anyone had an Ancestry DNA test?
« on: Thursday 08 December 22 21:54 GMT (UK)  »
I bit the bullet (i.e. payed a load of money) for a test. It came back much quicker than I'd expected, but didn't tell me anything I didn't already know from my own research. It gave some very precice and impressive percentages such as, "46% England and Northwestern Europe", but what did that really tell me about where my ancestors came from when I already knew they came from Normandy? To sum up: clever but useless IMHO.

I have some information on his elder brother Samuel, but nothing on George - sorry. I imagine West Sussex R O had nothing. Good luck.

]I came across an article on the following site that incuded interesting information on the Huguenot chapels of London. I notice that others on RootsChat have found it useful in the past too.

What a great resource! The last place I'd have looked for maps of London. Thanks for the info.

"how about photographing local graveyards? "

What an excellent idea! I like wandering around graveyards (I hate it when the stones are uprooted to use as paths BTW) and I'm into photography, plus it's an opportunity to get out in the fresh air. Problem solved.

I guess I need to check out some sites to avoid duplication.

I'm quite grumpy :( about the Ancestry project at the moment. I have transcribed and indexed for other sites, going way back to the early days of FreeBMD, but I've only been using the Ancestry software for one day and I find it quite unforgiving and tricky to use as a beginner.

Of course, if I persevere ...IF! ... it will become easier as they all do, but my main problem with it is it seems to be impossible to go back to something if you find you've been entering data in a way that doesn't conform strictly to their rules. It was also slightly off-putting to find my first attempt had been rated as "accuracy needs some improvement", but with no way to revisit what I'd done to help me improve.

And transcibing is a pretty altruistic occupation I'd say. It would be good to get some reward for the hours spent banging away on a keyboard. 10% off a year's subscription to ancestry? Try working out what that equates to per hour! I've 'keyed' for scotlandsplaces, for instance, and at least you get to view the whole set of material you are working on, and the community is really user-friendly too. I never felt like I was in an exam, for goodness sake.

So, I'm not sure if I'll be bothering to go back to ancestry. I'd like to find more 'non-profit making' projects to work on. Any ideas?

The Lighter Side / Re: Photos of child 'criminals' - Newcastle, 1870s

I think transportation may have stopped by the 1870s.
Absolutely correct. 1868 officially, I understand, but in reality some years before then. I must learn to engage my brain before posting.  :-[

They all look like wronguns to me.

Only joking. I was going to say you will do almost anything when you are near to starvation. but then I looked again and most of them seemed quite well nourished. Even so, it was a hard time when you could get transported for stealing a handkerchief.

Thanks for posting the link. Very interesting and quite poignant.

No, just click on Jerripedia family records database at the bottom of the page.
It is a new database and not complete, so "a work in progress". I had a quick look and there are no HOLMANs there, but you could try alternative, similar names (there is a button to check for names "starting with "

But I just looked at the site again and I don't have access any more  ??? . Strange. Perhaps I got lucky or they are now doing 'house-keeping' -I don't know now. Maybe try again later?
