I am attempting to transcribe the diary now. Find myself reading and re reading the pages and not doing much transcription. I am also attempting to transcribe cassette tapes of my grandmother and her aunt growing up on board ship.

Great topic for those of us with mariners in the weeds and trees.

Thanks for your advice. I have read some articles and I guess it depends on exactly what I want to scan and the size of the materials to be scanned. Probably going to buy the cheapest unit I can find for the immediate future. 

Sorry for the wrong name. Guess I didn't pay attention to the "spell check" button … or just another day with poor eyesight.

United States of America / Not in 1940 Census

Looking for my Paternal Great Grand Parents. I haven't been able to locate them in the 1940 US census for Marin County, California. I know where they lived (same house they built in 1914 - 1917. The house was located halfway up on the side of a hill. Since he had been a Sea Captain and spent several years at sea and then traveling on the high seas after retirement I assumed they could have been traveling and away from the house. After further research I realized their street/road along with several other nearby roads weren't in the census. Could the enumerator have gotten tired and not finished his route? Could the information be listed outside Marin County? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My paternal great grandfather was a sea captain (along with several other family members)and spent many years at sea. I have his diary from his first time at sea. He referenced writing, doodling, reading poetry and learning about the stars and astronomy. My grandmother and her 3 siblings also spent several years at sea. My great grandfather taught them mathematics and history (so I assume he must have had books or materials about those subjects) while my great grandmother taught my grandmother and one of her sisters how to play a piano while at sea.

My problem with thrulines is they disappear. On some days I have them and other days not enough information in my tree to have thrulines. I just assume someone somewhere is "updating the system".

I just ignore the "green potential ancestors" and focus on "known verifiable" ancestors.

Not sure where best to post this message. Looking to purchase a scanner that will scan old photographs, negatives,  and slides. Black & white photos date from the late 1880s to the 1970s and colored photos date from the 1950s to current. I also have some colored Polaroid photos. Negatives are from the early 1900s to about 1980 and are in various sizes and shapes. The slides date from the 1960s to the 1990s and are black and white and colored. I realize this activity will be time consuming but I now have the time to attempt this endeavor. What is the best scanner for this activity? Will one scanner do all of the above? What photo imagery editing program (am assuming I will need something since many of the old photos are faded, blurry and /or discolored) will work best after I scan? I am very low tech so any hints, comments, assistance, guidance will be greatly appreciated.
