Gloucestershire / Wendy *** born 1940 and now living in the Gloucester area.
« on: Monday 28 July 14 17:38 BST (UK)  »
I normally post on the Worcester forums, but I have just found a Gloucester link that might fill some gaps in my family history.
Last week a couple in their 70s were returning from London to Gloucester on a Megabus coach, and got into conversation with a person who posts on a Facebook page that I follow. The message enquired about a property in Malvern Link called London House, where a family called Jones owned a shoe shop. My Jones ancestors were boot and shoe makers for many decades and owned the London House property. A Facebook conversation ensued, and it appears that this chance meeting on a Megabus coach was what prompted the query. This journey took place as far as I know on Sunday 20th July.   The lady said she had grown up in London House, and I now believe she is in fact my 'lost' cousin Wendy (*) age 74 (born in Malvern 1940 , but not certain of her married name). The person she spoke to has no other information, but it would make my day if anyone in the Gloucester area knows this person and could put me in touch with her. I can be contacted by email: (*)

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Philip VALLANCE born Brighton 1803

Thank you, so pleased to have had such an immediate response. It all appears to be coming together as the couple you name are most certainly the parents of Philip born 1803.

Many thanks for that. Hadn't thought to look in non-conformist. I'd seen the Killick name before and wondered if that was a connection. Great to be able to add another paragraph to my research into Philip Vallance, who was a keen amateur astronomer, with probably one of the largest collections of telescopes in the country in his lifetime. He was a great friend of James Garbett, archdeacon of Chichester, also a keen astronomer. Vallance spent his early career as a farmer and successfully plowed fields with the aid of portable windmills. Later he moved to London where he traded as a timber merchant, before retiring to Cootham and a thirty year hobby in astronomy. His residence, Cobb Court, still stands and sold recently for nearly £900,000.

Philip Vallance, born Brighton 1803. D.o.b. from census records. Can't find him on FamilySearch. Looking for his parents and any siblings.  He married Frances Naylor in London in 1852. From 1865 till his death in 1897 he lived at Cobb Court, Cootham. His father may also have been Philip, and he possibly had a brother James who was a surgeon. Living in the West Midlands, I only have online records to look at, hence asking here for someone with local knowledge.

Between 1972 and 1986 I worked for Zodiac Toys, a retail chain of 80+ branches which were a division of Maynards. I have copies of the Maynards company Newsletter and during the '80s it contained a history of Maynards in serial form. Unfortunately Maynards were taken over before it was completed, but I have the copies that contain all the early years of the company up to 1960. When I have a moment I'll scan the pages and post a link here so that anyone interested can read them.

Hi Anita,
Thank you so much for that link. Yes, they are the Moore-Jones family that I've been researching. Great to see such excellent images. And I found a few more by searching just Jones  (one son didn't use the Moore prefix.)

Regards

Roger

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1891 census look up please

Hi Anne,
Not sure that I can help unless you are more specific. Do you want census lookups? I know nothing more about the Biles family apart from what you see on this forum. I merely looked up the census details on Ancestry.com.
