  Hi lechristo,
Happy to be of help. How is your Uncle connected to Richard Hislop ? I would love to know , maybe we can inform each other on some of the detail.
Forfarian may be correct - members of the wider family worshipped at  St Andrews by the Green an Episcopalian Church close to where this family lived and worked.
Look forward to hearing what you can add ,
                                                                                Thommoje

Hi Denise,
Good to hear from you. I explored the McIntosh family extensively as I was seeking to find out more about Helen Riddell ( a blood relative of mine ) who became the second wife of George Alexander Hope. George Alexander Hope came to Queensland  aboard the Helenslee in 1862 with his first wife Elizabeth Black and  family. (The story of the Helenslee is fascinating - do you know it?)
One of the children of that family was Margaret Turner Hope who married Robert Mc Intosh in Brisbane in September 1864. I have explored the many children of that union , though I expect you know more. I was  interested as these were among the few folk I had found who came to Queensland - most of my folk were Scots. As I live in Queensland , I thought I would keep going to see what I could find.
I have plenty about the extended family of George Alexander Hope who became one of the early pioneers of the sugar industry in Queensland  - based on the Nerang River , Southport.
We could get in touch by email if you wish. Regards , Jean

Hi Diana,
I am figuring you have received my Personal message re the Gillingham connection . Alan `s phone number was available in the BT residential phone numbers - he would be pleased to hear from you.
As soon as you are ready, contact me via my email and let  me have your postal address also . I am happy to send you as much as you can cope with re your Hislop s and mine.
Our connection stems from your 3x G Grandfather and my 2x G Grandfather, Richard Hislop - that makes us 3rd cousins once removed. He was actually born " Richard Heselhurst " in 1777 but that is another story for down the track.
I have been able to track most, if not all , of our family and back my findings with documentation. There is one will ( that of Isabella Hardie Hislop - sister of your g Grandfather Richard) which ties together the families of that Richard and his sisters , beautifully. Its detail tells me that your G grandfather , Richard, must have stayed in touch with his Scottish family despite living in London.
I look forward to hearing from you,  Jean

P.S.  I think that once you have submitted 4 posts on this site, you can send personal messages which will not be visible to others. If , for some reason, you don`t have my email, Alan has it and would be happy to give it to you, I`m sure

Hi Diana,
Great to hear from you - I believe I had contact with you many years ago. At that time, you were planning to investigate your family history but were time poor.Maybe that was via Genes Reunited .
I have been in touch with a cousin of yours who is a Grandson of Thomas Hislop , born 1865, who was the brother of your Grandfather, Charles Ernest. I have plenty to share and would be delighted to do so.
                    Regards, Jean

 Hi Iain,
I have just found your message. I am still researching our Glass family and can be contacted at the same email address on previous emails. Have you found any new details?

 Hi Jim,
Glad that I was able to be helpful. I too live is Australia (Queensland ) so  it is great to occasionally find little treasures like those photos. After I contacted you, I thought I should have a close look at all those photos on Flikr and lo and behold, there was a photo of the gravestone of my 4x G Grandparents on my Mum`s side - Robert Walls and his spouse Janet Mathie dating back to the 1820`s- so it turned out to be quite special for me too.I knew from a helpful researcher in Furnace , years ago, that they were buried there but had never seen a photo. New items are being added to the internet all the time , so it occasionally pays to go over old ground.
In one of my fringe families I have a Mary McKellar McIntosh who lived in the Wide Bay / Maryborough region of Queensland . Hmmm  ----
Happy to have been  some help Jean      ( Thommoje )

Hi Birdboot,
I also have family buried in Kilmalieu burial ground. Details for deaths around that time are not available, as you know.
I decided to have another dig around on the net and Googled " Kilmalieu burial ground"
Somebody has made available - on Flickr - photos of Kilmalieu and among them is a photo of the burial stone of your Catherine Ross , wife of Robert Mc Kellar , Innkeeper ---
Hopefully, you may be able to contact the person who took the photos and get copies.
Let me know how you get on, Regards, Jean

Dumfriesshire / Re: " They Came from Dumfries"
« on: Wednesday 11 February 15 21:57 GMT (UK)  »

 Hi Skoosh
Great variation in spellings of this, Black, in his "Scottish Surnames" has the earliest Hislop (hazel-hope), Alexander, in Edinburgh 1425.
I think a "Hope" is the farm at the head of a glen, south Scotland.
Glasgow 1446 then Houston, Kelso & Stow.
An Alexander Hesillip is in Carsphairn in 1684 so that could be your Hislop's?

Skoosh.
I solved that mystery some time ago but Skoosh was quite close to the truth of the matter in her reference to Hazelhope. My G G Grandfather did not come from Dumfries, he came from Stockton on Tees and his name was Heslehurst ( spelling variations being Hesslehurst , Haselhurst  etc etc ).He had been in the North York Militia ( in marriage record he is " Richard Hesslehurst , Soldier in Nth York Militia" - met his future wife in Glasgow and they married there in 1799 - went back to Yorkshire where two sons were born - then must have decided to return to Glasgow to live.
In doing so, he would seem to be deserting his militia obligations ( a possible hanging offence at the time ) so that could be the reason for the name change. Heslop was a common name in Yorkshire but crossing the border in to Scotland it becomes Hi/yslop. This couple married as Heslehurst but returned as Hyslop. Most of the subsequent families eventually adopted the Hislop spelling though a few persisted with Hyslop .
I was able to solve the mystery because a cousin in Scotland had contacted an elderly cousin whose father had seen the record of the name change in the Family Bible - would love to know where that Bible is!
Oh what a tangled web we weave! Thanks all for your interest,      Thommoje
