Hello Chris,
Thank you so much for your reply.   I first posted my interest in finding out about Frank Harris way back in 2009, so it was quite a surprise to be alerted to your response a couple of days ago.   Back in 2009 I was in the thick of researching my Robertson family tree,   Frank Harris was a cousin of my father.   My grandfather, John Robertson, married Jessie Anderson Harris, sister to James Harris, Frank's father. However, after my grandmother's death in 1946, my father (to his regret) had lost all contact with his mother's family, and by 2009 I was really struggling to find out anything about them.   I did make some progress a year later when I made contact with a Professor Macfarlane in Cambridge, who kindly sent me some information about the Harris family, but I would love to learn more about them.

If you would like to contact me directly, my e-mail address is:  (*)

Thank you again, and kind regards,

David.

Hi again Simone,

Good to know that you have been making progress.  I am intrigued that you refer to that 1924 booklet by the daughter of the Rev MacLaren on "Unrecorded echoes of recorded lives in Aberfeldy".
I've noticed it mentioned in a bibliography, but have never actually seen a copy, so I would be  interested to know what it was all about.

One question you may have found the answer to - what years did the Rev McLaren serve as Minister of the Independent Church in Aberfeldy?  I think you said he was there for 34 years.

Regards,

David.

Hi John,

Your Moxon in Prescot with a daughter named Patricia could be the right one.   Patricia R M Moxon married Sydney R Adlington in Gainsborough RD in the 3rd quarter of 1941 according to the BMD indexes - so hence the Mrs P Adlington (daughter) amongst the mourners.

Hope that helps somehow.

Lincolnshire / Braceby family histories
« on: Friday 12 October 12 09:37 BST (UK)  »
I and another resident of BRACEBY are beginning to carry out research into the history of all the families who have lived in this small South Lincolnshire farming village at some time during the period from the early 1800s until about 1970.   We would be interested to hear from anyone who has found that their own family history research has led them down the country lanes of Lincolnshire to discover Braceby.  If you wish to communicate privately, then my e-mail address is dmrbraceby[at]hotmail.com

Thank you.

Stuart,

Thanks for this.  Not sure if there is a connection, but there might just possibly be one.  My great great great grandfather, Thomas Robertson, born in Fossoway in 1757 and married to Margaret Morgan had ten children, the eldest son of whom. also Thomas, was born at Menstrie in 1793.  Old family notes tell me that he was married  and had four children and died in 1819 - but nothing more and no names - and I have never been able to trace the family any further.  It is quite likely that his eldest son would also be called Thomas and he might just be your great great grandfather who married Margaret White.   But then again, your Thomas might be the grandson of one of my great great great grandfather's siblings.  The trouble is that there are far too many Robertsons to be sure!

Hi Shailee,

Your references to the Fisher family are interesting.   I am researching Fisher's Hotel in Pitlochry, and would be interested to know where you found out that Donald Fisher had the hotel from 1853.  From reading Colin Liddell's recent book on the history of Pitlochry, I thought that it would have been in the 1860s when Donald Fisher took over.

Simone,

I have no connection with your family, but I was interested in your references to the Independent (or Congregational) Church of Aberfeldy.   The first minister of the Congregational Church was Dr James Kennedy who acquired a house in The Square in 1810, and there is a sketch of this building in Dr Mackay's book entitled Aberfeldy Past and Present.  Initially, the congregation had to meet in a ground floor room of this house, until a new chapel was built nearby in 1820, after which the house in the Square continued to serve as the manse for over 50 years.  However, in 1877 work was started on building a new church on the site of the manse, and for 30 years the ministers of the Independent Church had no 'official' residence until a new manse was acquired on Kenmore Street.

I mention this because I think you will find that the addresses on the Censuses you mention are not necessarily the same building.  Certainly 47 Kenmore Street is not the same as The Square Aberfeldy.  I don't know about Joy Cottage.  Perhaps the Rev John went to Aberfeldy while there was still a manse in The Square, and then had to move elsewhere when the new church was built in 1877?

Kinross-shire / Robertsons from Fossoway and Kinross

Just wondering whether anyone might have connections to the family of Thomas Robertson of Kinross and Fossoway.

Thomas Robertson of Kinross married Katherine Blay'd/Blayth/Blyth in Glendevon parish in December 1747.  They had a child John born at Balado wester in Kinross parish in March 1749.  Two further sons born to Thomas Robertson in Bankhead, Fossoway and Tullibole parish, in 1753 (William, died four months later) and 1754 (Harie) may also be their children.

Thomas and Katherine then seem to have moved to live at the Old Manse of Fossoway, where they had three more children, Thomas born 1757 (my great great great grandfather), Alexander born 1760 and Katharine born 1765.

Thomas was widowed when Katharine Blyth died in 1768, but appears to have then re-married to Margaret Morice.  He had three more children, David born 1772 and Isabel born 1774, both at the Old Manse, and finally Margaret in 1776 in Middleloan.  Margaret Morice, "spouse to Thomas Robertson in Damside[?] of Devon" died in March 1779.

My great great great grandfather Thomas, born 1757, eventually married Margaret Morgan and lived near Menstrie from 1795 onwards, but I can find no further information about what became of any of his siblings.  Is there anyone out there who may be descended from any of these siblings?

David.

Yes, I am still around, and delighted to see that this thread has been brought to life again by sesd and jorose.

That could well be him in Prince Albert - I think he probably emigrated to Canada in about 1921/22.  Thanks for setting me off down the track again.

David.
