The Lighter Side / Re: Book writing advice needed please !
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 19:31 BST (UK)  »
During the late 90s I worked with someone who wrote a book - a thriller, set locally as well as in the Far East.   I don't mean to put you off, but she had quite a job finding a reputable publisher, eventually getting her book printed in America.

We worked in a big place and most people had said they'd buy a book once she had received a delivery.  The books duly arrived and she spent a very happy lunch hour selling most of them.  I don't know if she covered her initial financial outlay, including having a professional photograph taken which she said was very pricey.

She moved to another area and I don't know if she has written other books and had them published.  I google her name occasionally, but nothing comes up.   I think she considered it a tremendous achievement and that may have been enough for her.

I think it is goggles that have been pushed to the back of his head, possibly over a cap.  Just out of curiousity, is that a big white dog sitting in the bushes near the boat watching the guys with the motor bike and sidecar?  Cuthie

I remember when most houses had an upright piano, even although no one in the household played the piano.  I expect the instrument was handed down from one generation to another.

One of my friends and I signed "the Pledge" when we were about 12 or 13 I imagine or perhaps even younger..  We came out of Sunday School at our local Methodist Church feeling quite pleased with ourselves.  However, my Mother was a bit upset that we may have signed something that we really didn't understand and had got a bit carried away not realising the significance of it.

We lived in a big town then with plenty pubs and it was not unusual to see men who were drunk either on the street or trams, buses and I think we wanted to ensure we'd never be in this state.

Renfrewshire / Re: Port-Glasgow Ship Builder Ferguson Brothers

What a lucky find.  Some fascinating photos.  I wonder if anyone will be able to identify any of the people or the locations.   In the early 60s I was at a dinner dance given by Ferguson Bros. which was very enjoyable and well attended, although I cannot remember the actual venue.

The Common Room / Re: A bit shocked, Confused...and a bit hurt

Hope you are feeling a bit less shocked by all this.  It is sometimes hard to accept that close members of ones family could behave in a way that you would perhaps not expect them to.

Just a thought about the baby born in December.  Is it possible that this could have been a premature birth?  If so, it would give a little bit more of an interval between the two births.

It does look pretty like "rk" and not "sh".  Perhaps Erskine was pronounced differently back then.  Cuthie

Don't know if this will be of any help but there used to be a lovely young lady by the name of Joanne Malin (Mallin?) on ITV's Central News which is broadcast from Birmingham.  Joanne left to play in local pantomimes, but does on the odd occasion appear back on the news programme.

In the process of reading  A Scots Quair by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, the "action" taking place in Aberdeenshire.  I am so glad there is a glossary at the end of the book, as while I know a lot of the words, many if not most of them are new to me.
