« on: Wednesday 20 June 12 03:51 BST (UK)  »
HI
I have a few of my ancestors that were road contractors in country NSW, does any one know what this job involved? It was in the 1800's so it must have been hard work.

Occupation Interests / Gamekeepers
« on: Monday 11 June 12 09:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am after any information about a gamekeeper in Hampshire named Edward Day the dates would have been between 1800-1850. Is there any where I can find information about gamekeepers, I am in Australia so I can't make it to any archive places in the UK. His son Edward D Day was born in 1826 in Selborne Hampshire so his father must have worked in that area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Hi
It is on his marriage certificate and his death certificate, he married in Australia but I have not yet found how he got to Australia, and his middle name is Darby which I thought could his mothers maiden name or her mothers maiden name but I have had no luck with that line either, he listed his fathers occupation as  a gamekeeper in Selborne, I don't know if he had any other siblings. This guy is turning into a real mystery.

Does it date to between 1670s & 1770 or thereabouts? It could be to do with being buried in wool.

Bingo!!! its to do with being buried in wool, I checked out the link you gave me and it all makes sense now. thanks .

I would have thought it stands for  affidavit - ie a formal sworn statement of fact.

An affidavit for what though???????

Sussex / Re: Help finding Sussex convict.

According to the Criminal Registers his death sentence appears to have been commuted to transportation for life.

The Pilotfamilysearch site has a burial for a Cephus TREE at Brighthelmstone, 11 Feb 1816, with age of 70, which is a birth year of 1746, which could be him.

Ian C

Thanks for that Ian this seems to be the right one, I have tried transportation searches for Cephas Tree/Attree and have had no luck so it seems likely that he died while in prison. If he died in prison would he be buried at a church or somewhere else?

Hi

Thanks for all that information.  I am writing to the Sussex records office for any information about Cephas.
Where else were convicts transported to apart from Australia?

Cheers
