Wigtownshire / Re: Kirkcolm Church Yards

I have read the message with surnames Blain and Paterson, and wonder if there is a connection somewhere also to surnames Hardy, Knox, Brown, and/or Penman? My g-grandfather's name was William Blain Hardy. His father was Thomas Blain Hardy. William married Frances Penman Brown, whose parents were Frances Penman and John Brown. Frances Penman's parents were David Penman and Helen Paterson. Can anyone help me connect the Blain with my other surnames? Could the spelling of Blain as I've written be incorrect? All the boys/men mentioned were coalminers. I'm sure some of the women and girls were as well.

Staffordshire / William Wilson and Margaret of Stafford
« on: Friday 08 May 09 04:36 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for information on William Wilson, born around 1811 in Staffordshire. He married Margaret about 1830.  The town listed for them is Stafford, but that may not be correct. They are later listed in Lancashire.

Scotland / Re: Burial Information Needed

Hello-I have ancestors named KNOX, one of whom was Thomas Knox. He was christened in 1827. His parents were Thomas KNOX and Janet MORRISON. I came here today looking for these 2 names myself as I found pages from the family bible with this information. I have not looked into them yet, but if there is a connection to Berwick, I will let you know.

Midlothian / Knox/1940s Letter-Inheritance in Edinburgh
« on: Thursday 22 February 07 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
I was looking through family history information, and found that my g-grandmother, Frances PENMAN BROWN HARDY, received a notice dating from the 1940s informing her that she had inheritance rights to property in Edinburgh, Midlothian County, Scotland, from her mother's (Ann KNOX Brown) family. Ann's parents were Thomas KNOX and Ann CAMPBELL KNOX. His parents were Thomas KNOX and Janet MORRISON. I am wondering if anyone knows what property this was and/or where it was located. It was real estate, which she declined due to back taxes owed, legal costs, etc. Please let me know. Thank you so much.

Lancashire / Re: Our Wilsons Were Coal Miners-Where do I look for them?

I found the coal mining article I mentioned:

http://www.mcpitz.com/history.html

Although it refers to Scottish miners, I was correct in relating their ostracism from society:

"In parts of Fife in the 18th century, miners could not be buried in the church graveyard or other consecrated ground. Even in the very churches, barriers were erected so that other members of the community wouldn't have to mingle with or look upon the miners and their families. In some cases they even had to enter and leave the church by a separate door to prevent contact with the better quality members of the congregation."

I found some of the sites that detail the deplorable conditions of the coal miners and their families, including women and young children, as well as the 1842 report:
1) http://www.cmhrc.co.uk/
2)http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/1842womenminers.html
3) www.mining-villages.co.uk/

4) www.blantyrepast.com/mining.html

5)www.sorbie.net/lanarkshire_mining_industry.htm

--these last three were posted in a reply to me by MonicaLesl here on rootschat, prior to my getting a new email addy!

I believe I got the link for the coal mining information and the mining villages, lives of the miners, etc., here on rootschat some time ago. Edwin was born only in Lancashire, sometimes with Lancaster/York as place, but the York part makes no sense to me. Being from USA, I am not that familiar with counties, but always relate York with Yorkshire, as we have miners from there also... I will go back through my records and see what info I have on them being set apart at worship, children signed on as future miners...I may have misunderstood, but took it to heart as it upset me so.

Lancashire / Our Wilsons Were Coal Miners-Where do I look for them?
« on: Monday 15 January 07 00:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all-I am wondering if records were kept for coal miners' families back in the late 1700s-early 1800s in Lancashire? Our Wilsons, William born app. 1811, wife Margaret born app. 1815, and children Edwin (born 10/31/1832-my g-g-g-gfather), William (b. 1838), Walter/Walton (born 1848), James (b. 1851), and Charles b. 1853). I ask because I do not know if their childrens' births would have been registered or their marriages or deaths? I cannot find them in a census, but they arrived in Pennsylvania USA in 1854-56 and do appear on censuses here. I am under the impression that the miners were more or less indentured, and their families also, to the owners and were not permitted to be seated with other worshippers at churches and such due to their occupation. Please let me know.
