Sussex / Early (before abt 1625) BLAKER in Sussex
« on: Sunday 06 April 08 18:16 BST (UK)  »
A small group are involved in a one name study for the name BLAKER, concentrating at present on occurrences in Sussex, where the name is particularly common.

Our present focus, within this, is on any BLAKER alive before 1625.

Now, we have been busy garnering references to the BLAKER name online and off. This is fine where BLAKER is the most significant name and has therefore been indexed. What we need now are other references.

So, please, if you have any BLAKER mentioned as a witness, legatee etc in a will or a marriage etc, or in any other sense, for example Manor Rolls, lawsuit etc, before 1625 in Sussex (although others are of interest), please can you forward them to one of the following:

Cheshire / Re: A Silk Mill (part-)owned by John Sharrer C18

Hi Sheila

I had forgotten googlebooks - used it for other ancestral family, but not for a long time.

It has yielded some more information such as the probable London church used by the WARD and family for several generations - the quaintly names St Benet Sherehog.

The French site was no problem. It is a compendium listing recent patents and discoveries. The one you picked up on was a machine for doubling threads of silk, linen and cotton - part of the spinning process. There is a British patent taken out in 1804 - my guess is for the same machine.

Indeed they did. John Sharrer gave evidence in the trial of a man who stole 8 ounces of raw Turkish silk from one of his home workers.

Yes - I have seen this too - at the Old Bailey site.
It is worth a search as all sorts turn up, not just the "black sheep", often giving evidence as witnesses.

And thank you to Cathy again - I will contact you privately

Hi Cathy

Thank you for that information. It is useful to have the nephew's partner's name and to know that the business was not only silk.

I know George WARD's son John Sharrer WARD (of Bruton, Somerset) was bankrupt in 1849, which I expect was detailed in The Times. I have not got access to the paper's archives at the moment but I expect it was reported.

And thank you "Hackstaple" - the website is really interesting and entirely relevant, giving, as it does, the background and development of the textile industry. I have only skimmed the surface - there is so much information.

Cheshire / A Silk Mill (part-)owned by John Sharrer C18
« on: Monday 18 June 07 19:08 BST (UK)  »
Recently I was reading an article in "Dorset Natural History and Antiquarian Field Club" Proceedings of 1916 about the silk industry in Sherborne, Dorset.

This referred to the first manufacturer of silk in the town as John SHARRER of Little Ayliffe Street, Goodman's Fields, Whitechapel. It also mentioned that he had other businesses in London, Gloucestershire and Cheshire in the mid to late eighteenth century. He died about 1767. His will does not help :(

I am trying to find out more about his business interests in Cheshire, probably silk throwing or a silk mill.
Can anyone help, please?

Hi Chris
I have just realised to my great shame and embarrassment, that I have never thanked you for all the fantastic information you posted last January.
My only, and hardly acceptable, excuse is that I completely forgot about the RootsChat system.
Please, accept my belated thanks, your kindness is much appreciated.

Hi Chris
I would be very interested in any BORRER and SCRASE entries whatsoever. Also any BLAKER from Lewes (the Cuckfield ones are what appears to be a separate branch) would be very much appreciated. I assume entries are for individuals and do not refer to families. If I am wrong, then I will try and sort out the particular families I am interested in.

I am overcome by the kindness of your further offers, but I have so many possibilities to ask about that I could overwhelm you, so I will stick with the names above, with one addition, Katherine Louisa BEARD born about 1850 in Lewes according to the 1881 Census, father William.

I have only found one connection to South Malling: Barbara SCRASE married William (Henry?) HOLLINGDALE in 1782, but no known burials.

I noticed your WILSON coat of arms. I have a few WILSON linked to TURNER:
SarahW m WilliamT 1753
and ThomasW m SusannahT 1667
and I would love to discover if they were related as I am discovering lots of intermarriages over the centuries between my families of interest. Do they mean anything at all to you?

I cannot see the SCRASE headstone on the page. I assume it is the system and not me. Shame as the Kemp one is interesting. You are doing a marvellous job recording these.

Chris, thank you again
Regards Chris
