Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Dating Please - Norah and Jack
« on: Saturday 13 February 16 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
My thoughts too jim1. If this is the same young women then this photo would have been taken around a year or less before Nora passed away in 1917 at 17 years. The background to Nora's story is that she had a child at around 16 years of age and died aprox. 7 months later in an asylum (confirmed with birth and death certificates). I wonder if Jack was her beau? He may be a relative but I've yet to discover him in my research.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dating Please - Norah and Jack
« on: Saturday 13 February 16 06:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All  ;D,
Would someone be kind enough to give a possible date to this photograph please. I'm trying to ascertain if the young women in the photo could possibly be my grandfather's sister Nora born 1900 in Sheffield, UK. I've done a bit of research on the photographic studio that took the photo being Van Ralty Studio's and apparently they had a studio at 57 Fargate, Sheffield so this would tie in nicely. Only thing is my grandfather's sister's name was spelt Nora not Norah.I know people often spelled their names differently in the past but a dating would give me a bit more to go on. Sadly, Nora passed away at 17 years old at Storthes Hall Asylum. I've no idea who Jack could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lincolnshire Completed Look up Requests / Re: Rogers marriage lookup please
« on: Sunday 12 April 15 00:04 BST (UK)  »
Thanks so much Bumble B and Trish 1120  ;D This is huge help and indeed this is my Silvester and Arabella. Given that Silvester lived and died in Carlton Scroop I assumed the marriage took place there but I should have heeded my own rule - never assume anything when it comes to family history  ;D Another brick wall taken down.

Lincolnshire Completed Look up Requests / Rogers marriage lookup please
« on: Saturday 11 April 15 02:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm having trouble finding a marriage for the following
Silvester Rogers (b. 1786) to Arabella ? on or around 1806 in Carlton Scroop, Grantham, Linc.
Arabella died 1836 so doesn't appear on any census records. She is recorded with no surname on birth index's of her children. Would like to know what her surname is. I have ordered a death certificate on one of her children, Louis Silvester Rogers which may help but cant seem to find a marriage in any of the indexes for her.
Sorry I don't have much more info.
Any help is appreciated. :)

More info has come to light. Going on a photo of the headstone that my friend in Sheffield emailed me yesterday it would seem Nora's mother took the baby in as her own - "Minnie mother of John (?) and Ronald (Nora's baby) The headstone is a memorial to Nora who died at the asylum and her twin brother who died aged 16 at the Battle of Somme. Ronald died aged 25 at South Yorkshire Mental Hospital.  :'(

The Common Room / Re: Strange causes of death
« on: Saturday 07 September 13 06:04 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather's youngest sister died at the age of 17 in an asylum. Cause of death............"exhaustion from mania". Further research showed she had in fact had a child and being unmarried there was reason not to give a true cause. I'm guessing it was complications from childbirth. These cases were often covered up.

The Common Room / When A Hunch Pays Off

For over a year now I have been researching a particular ancestor who was a bit of a mystery. Nora was my grandfather's youngest sister who disappeared off the census records after 1911. One particular entry of a death record seemed like a close match but after ordering it is still didn't give me much joy as this Nora died at Storthes Hall asylum in 1917 from "exhaustion from mania" after a being in the Eccelsall Union Workhouse for some time. So...........no next of kin on her death certificate. After more emails and letters to the archives and NHS (with the help of a good friend living near the archives in Sheffield) I was able to ascertain that she was indeed my Nora. But why was she in a workhouse? Why did she die two days after being transferred to Storthes Hall Asylum? She was 17 and came from a upper middleclass family for goodness sakes. Taking a stab in the dark I looked up births in the area at that time and found one that seemed to fit as the mother's name was listed as the same surname as the child. 3 weeks of waiting finally paid off yesterday when I received the birth certificate and lo and behold .............the mother was my Nora confirmed by the address of where the child was born. A bitter sweet ending I feel. So happy to finally have some answers but so very sad for Nora who became an unmarried mother at 16 and with no family to support her died at 17 in an asylum where she is probably at rest in the grounds to this day still a child herself. I love when a hunch pays off but sometimes the answers are not always what we would like to hear. :(

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Records for Storthes Hall Asylum
« on: Sunday 05 August 12 01:48 BST (UK)  »
Ok so I finally heard back from Sheffield Archives via my mate in Sheffield. The good news is that the info confirmes that this Nora was indeed my grandfathers sister. Bad news is there is no records stating why she was admitted. Interestly, Nora was admitted to the workhouse January 26 1917 and transfered to Storthes Hall Asylum January 30th 1917 where she died two days later - a very short time indeed. According to my mate and the Archives many workhouse inmates were transfered to other locations further out of town due to the increasing amount of WW1 soldiers who were being admitted for care and rest at the local workhouses.
In answer to your question pelazaire, you will need to obtain permission from the NHS for the Archives to search any info you are requesting about inmates from Storthes Hall. This is due to the 100 year protection rule and because the NHS "ownes" the records. The Archives merely houses them. Once this is obtained you need to contact Wakefield Archives (this can be done and paid for online) requesting the information you want and your letter from NHS giving permission (although NHS were kind enough to send a letter to Sheffield Archives direct for me). Then it's a waiting game with fingers crossed. I intent to now contact Wakefield Archives for Nora's records at Storthes Hall so the saga continues  :)
Best of luck in your search.

Thanks Kaz, I have since contacted Wakefield Archives and have recieved approval from the NHS for them to search the records (100 year rule still in play). My mate in Sheffield has been wonderful getting paperwork back on forth to them for me which has sped up the process greatly. Am waiting for a reply with baited breath. I read about the memorial service for the poor souls buried at Thurstonland Church. I'm so glad there is recognition for them now. I doubt I'll ever know for sure if Nora is buried there but if she is at least she has some peace now.
